  1. AMS-02 Thermal Analysis AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  2. Overview • Extensive thermal modeling and analyses have been performed on AMS-02. • Analyses are performed on an integrated system level as well as more detail sub-system and component levels. AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  3. Organization • Carlo Gavazzi Space (CGS) has overall responsibility for system level design and analysis • AMS-02 Thermal Working Group (TWG) provides oversight and review for all thermal activities • TWG includes NASA, ESCG, and AMS Collaboration members • Sub-detector teams are responsible for their own thermal design and analysis AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  4. System Level Analyses • Top Level analyses are performed using a “reduced” AMS-02 model integrated with an ISS or Orbiter model • System level analyses are performed both at CGS/Milan and at ESCG. • SINDA/FLUINT, TSS and Thermal Desktop used for thermal analyses AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  5. AMS-02 on ISS(TSS) AMS-02 AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  6. AMS-02 on ISS S3 Truss(TSS) AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  7. AMS-02 Geometry Model (Thermal Desktop) AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  8. System Level Models • Used for survey to determine extreme cases • Used to directly analyze many subsystems • Used to provide interface data for detailed subsystem models AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  9. Subsystem Analyses • System level model includes reduced (lower fidelity) models for several subsystems. • CGS provides thermal interface data to subsystem analysts for detailed analyses. • Comparison of results and iterations between system level and subsystems assure validity of interface data. AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  10. Attitude Survey • A survey of possible ISS attitudes was performed to determine extreme cases for all AMS-02 subsystems • Survey accounted for entire range of solar beta angles (-75º to +75º) • Possible ISS attitudes considered: • Roll = +/-15º • Yaw = +/-15º • Pitch = -20º to +15º (0º to +25º when orbiter docked) • Altitudes from +150 to 270 nmi AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  11. Attitude Survey (continued) • 256 survey cases considered • Results were screened to determine extreme cases for AMS-02 components • All extreme cases were re-run using additional analytical detail and extreme hot or cold natural environments. AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  12. Hot & Cold Environments(per SSP 57003) AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  13. Additional Analyses Considered • In Payload Bay (undocked) • In Payload Bay (docked to ISS) • Transfer (between STS & ISS) • On ISS unpowered (8 hours for mission success, continuous for safety) AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  14. Special Cases Considered • Potential freezing of fluid systems • TTCS (ESCG-4470-06-TEAN-DOC-0032) • TRDGB (ESCG-4470-06-TEAN-DOC-0086) • EVA Touch Temperature • ESCG-4470-07-TEAN-DOC-0033 • Analysis of heaters with two failures • AMS02-TN-CGS-007, Issue 2 AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review

  15. Special Cases (continued) • Magnet charging/discharging • Auto-ignition evaluation (pending) • Stuck open vent door evaluation (pending) AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review
