ATTİLA İLHAN • He was born on the 15th of June in 1925 in Menemen, İzmir. • He went to elementary school and secondary school in different cities because of his father's job. • He graduated from Işık High School in İstanbul.
His Youth Times…
When he was in the last grade of high school, he joined CHP's poem competition. • He became the winner with his poem “Cabbaroğlu Mehmet” and won the prize. • After this , he became prosperous quickly and everyone started to admire him.
He registered to Istanbul University Law Faculty. • In his successful years in Law Faculty, his poems were published in magazines such as “Yığın” and “Gün”. • He didn't continue his advanced studies. • He published his first poem book which is called “Duvar” (The Wall)in 1948.
Years in Paris
In 1948 when he was in the university, he went to Paris to join Nazım Hikmet's relief operations. • He was active in this operation. • He learnt French and Marxism during this time in France. • He became well-known in 1950 when he spent his days in İzmir, İstanbul and Paris.
VERSATILITY IN ART • He started to write movie critiques for Vatan newspaper in 1953. • He returned to Istanbul after completing military service in Erzincan in 1957. • He wrote approximately 15 screenplays . • He returned to Paris in 1960. • His father died, when he was working on broadcasting in Paris. So he returned to İzmir and the İzmir era started.
He was the post of the editorial writer and executive editor of İzmir newspaper. • In the same years, his first poem book was published. • He got married in 1968 and had a happy marriage for 15 years.
He undertook the counseling of Bilgi Publishing House in 1973 and moved to Ankara. • He wrote “Sırtlan Payı(The Hyena Share) ” and “Yaraya Tuz Basmak(Hurt to Heal) ” in Ankara. • He lived in Ankara until 1981. Thenhe moved to Istanbul after he completed his novel “Fena Halde Leman (Mrs. Leman)”.
He continued being a journalist of Milliyet and Gelişim publications in İstanbul ( 2nd of March, 1982 - 15th of November, 1987) • Between the years 1993 - 2005 he wrote for other different newspapers.
As soon as the television broadcasts started in 1970s, he started to write screenplays again. People enjoyed watching his serials.
Attila İlhan studied history in his last years before he died. • He undertook the mission of introducing Atatürk(the founder of Turkish Republic)and closest history of Turkey to everyone. • In his works he always mentioned the conditions in which the national fight was won and he attempted to describe the mood of those people in that time.
His poems, essays and critiques were published in different magazines. He became the most important person in Turkish Literature. • He initiated a socialist and realistic poem movement. He found out a new rhyme system. • He created an impressive narration and he brought sensitivity to the poems. • He effected the majority of the young poets with his works.
His readers appreciate him due to • his respectful attitudes towards people • his style of writing
Attila İlhan had his first heart attack in 1985. In 2004 his condition gradually deteriorated and at the age of 80 he lost his life owing to the second heart attack in his house in Istanbul on the 11th of October in 2005.
