OBJECTIVE 1 • Personality disorders are rigid personality patterns that cause personal distress or an inability to get along with others • unchanging, maladaptive (poorly adapted) traits- cause great distress or inability to get along with others • Not caused by medical conditions, stress, or situations that temporarily induce people to act out of character • Chronic, inflexable, pervasive

  11. 1990’S changed the name • Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is a disorder characterized by antisocial behavior such as lying, stealing, manipulating others, and sometimes violence; and a lack of guilt, shame, and empathy • Pervasive pattern= repeatedly break laws, impulsive, quick to fight, irresponsible • DSM made change to emphasize behavior signs

OTOH psychopaths slow or no change • Physiological basis- Show psychopaths pictures of people suffering skin conductance barely changes OTOH normal people= significant change

  17. 3rd cause of APD • Genetic influences • 100 Studies find genes 40-50% of the variation in antisocial behavior • Longitudinal study of boys physically abused= boys with deficiency in cruel gene far more arrests, violent crimes than boys with normal gene
