  2. What’s the Problem - Food Allergy? Food Allergies is an autoimmune disease because when a specific food enters the immune system and the system mistakenly identifies a food protein as harmful. This is called hypersensitivity reaction because something harmless triggers symptoms such as skin rash, nausea, vomiting, cramping, and diarrhea. Severe food allergy symptoms would be known as anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock. These develop rapidly, often in a matter of seconds or minutes. They include abnormal breathing sounds, dizziness, and slurred speech. Usually children under six years have real food allergies. The rest is known as food intolerance. It is easy to confuse, but with food intolerance, you only get mild symptoms like an upset stomach. Allergic reactions happen when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, in this case a food protein. White blood cells produce an antibody (which happens when an immunoglobulin or IgE comes into the body and make a antigen). When the antibody comes in contact with the food protein, it releases chemicals called "mediators" such as Histamine. Histamine dilates the blood vessels and makes the vessel walls abnormally permeable. Mediators act on mainly the throat, skin, airways, intestines, and heart. The effects of the mediator on organs and other cells cause the symptoms of the allergic reaction. 90% of food allergies are because of eggs, milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish. People who are diagnosed with food allergies may carry an injectable form of Epinephrine (or Adrenaline) which is a hormone and neurotransmitter. It increases heart rate, contracts blood vessels, and dilates air passages. A patient may also wear medical alert jewelry which is a USB alert tag. It has all the patient's doctors, conditions, medical conditions, and emergency contacts. The intention is to alert a doctor or police of the condition of the wearer even if they are not old enough to explain or unconscious. Source: Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_allergy

  3. Solutions - #1: Anti-food allergy filter • Filter the food (liquid and solid) and remove the allergic ingredient from the food • One type is disposable (and bio-degradable), another one is reusable. Both are foldable. • Use steel for light-weight and easy to clean • Size is small enough to put it in a lunch box or a lunch bag • Cost is around $ 100 (reusable) or $ 20 (6-pack disposable)

  4. Filter to Remove Allergens Features: • Filter solids and liquids • Disposable or reusable • Able to fold into a box • Washable Materials: • Surgical steel • Bamboo or Charcoal? Color/Size/Shape: • Customized color • Tennis ball size can fit in lunch box Price: • $100 (reusable) • 6 pack at $20 Targeted Customers: • General Public

  5. Device to Destroy Allergens Features: • Release chemical content to disintegrate the allergic chemicals Color/size/shape: • “Like microwave” put food inside to kill the allergic ingredients Price: • $200 Benefits: • Non-contact • Powerful • Can process food in large quantities

  6. Solutions - #2: Wireless Food allergy sensor/scanner • Can detect if the food (liquid and solid) has any allergic ingredient based on the user/owner’s medical profile • One type is non-contact (using ultrasound wave to detect/scan). Another one will be in the food to detect (more like a sensor). • Wirelessly (via wi-fi, bluetooth, etc) connected to a device/laptop/iPhone to send/receive information • Can be used together with the filter if allergic content is detected and needs to be removed from the food • Can have a special version to work with iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and install an iPhone Apps for this detection • Cost is around $ 200

  7. iPhone and Sensor Camera Features: • Asks for personal profile information • Send radio waves to food to detect ingredients • Download your allergy testing results from your doctor Price-point possibilities: • $75 • $100 • $150

  10. Electronic Device and Sensor Features: • Device and sensor connected by • Wi-Fi • Bluetooth • USB wire • Devices can be • iPad • iPhone (or other smart phone) • Laptop Price: • $100

  11. Some Research that we have done

  12. Questions to Ask the Experts • About food allergies • Why does your body not like the certain type of food that your body is allergic to? • Do all people who have allergies have the same reactions? • Why do people get food allergies? • Can you get food allergies while you are living or does it occur when you are born? • Can you die from food allergies?

  13. Questions to Ask the Experts • About our solutions • Which solution do you like better? Why? • Which solution would have a better chance to implement? Why? • Do you know of any similar solutions in the market? • Who / where else should we get more feedback / research from?

  14. Questions to Ask the Experts • About the Expert • What inspired you to become a doctor • What interested you when you were our age • What education and training needed to follow this career • What are some qualities that would help in this career • What do you like most about your job • What do you like least about your job • What is a typical workday like for you? • Do you treat food allergies? • How do you decide the price for a medical device or solution
