Welcome to SPEA!

Office Procedures

Office Hours

  • We want to assist you as you schedule classes, make decisions about your majors and minors, and move forward in your SPEA career.

  • Because there are so many of you, the advisors cannot accommodate drop-ins, phone-ins, or same-day appointments.

  • In order to better assist you with questions, please note our walk-in and appointment times.

  • We are open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment.

  • Walk-in advising is available during scheduled hours only.

  • Our office is available by:

    • Phone at 812-855-0635.

    • Email at [email protected]

    • Phone and email messages will be returned within 2 business days.

Walk-in Advising

  • We have walk-in advising available to help you with short-answer questions (10 minute or less meetings) such as:

    • Adding or dropping a class

    • Making a class Pass/Fail

    • Declaring your minor

    • Picking up a second eight-weeks class, etc.

  • Walk-in Hours are Tuesdays 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. AND Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

  • We also have special walk-in times during the semester as announced .

Advising appointments
Advising Appointments

  • Not every question can be answered in a walk-in.

  • Make an appointment (30-60 minute meetings)!

  • Some topics that require an appointment include:

    • Study-abroad

    • Long-term or full semester planning

    • Adding a major or changing your major

    • Honors Program or Accelerated Master’s Program

  • Please Plan Ahead.

    • Appointment times may be full up to 2 weeks in advance.

    • No same-day appointments may be made.

    • Keep your appointment.

The fine print
The Fine Print:

  • You are required to cancel an appointment, in advance, if you cannot keep it. If you miss two appointments without notifying us, you may not be permitted to make any more appointments for the semester.

  • Please review a current and expanded copy of your Academic Advisement Report (AAR) for all advising sessions, both walk-in and appointment. Reviewing your AAR prior to a meeting with an advisor is YOUR responsibility.

    • Be prepared to print and bring your AAR to advising sessions as needed (or have it available on your laptop).

  • Go to

  • Log in.

  • Click Student Self Service.

  • Click on “SIS Go to Student Center.”

  • Click “My Academics & Grades.”

  • Click “View My Advisement Report.”

  • Select “Bloomington” and “AAR & Transcript” from the drop boxes. Then click “Process Request” and you should arrive at your Advisement Report.

    Once you access it, select “Expand all,”and please print and bring to all of your advising appointments and every walk-in, or have it available on your laptop.

If a Degree Requirement still needs to be met, you will see “Not Satisfied” noted in Red under that requirement.

If you have taken a course that meets and satisfies a Degree Requirement, you will see “Satisfied” noted in Black, and the information for the course that you took.

  • If a course has been transferred in to IU, you will see a, which means the course has been transferred.

  • If you are currently registered for a course (current or future semester), you will see a , which means the course is “in-progress”.

  • Student Privacy and FERPA

    • FERPA = Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act

    • A key component of the law is:

      • School officials (including the SPEA Undergraduate Programs Office) may not disclose personally identifiable information about students, nor permit inspection of their records, without written permissionunless such action is covered by exceptions permitted by the Act. A notable exception is disclosing information to school officials determined by the institution to have a legitimate educational interest.

        • This means that without your written consent, we can not and will not share your academic information with your family members, friends, or others.

    • A form to provide your written consent to share your private academic information can be obtained in the SPEA Undergraduate Programs Office (SPEA 240).

Communication: A Note On E-Mail

  • Indiana University considers correspondence via email with your IU address to be an official form of communication. SPEA does, too.

  • You are expected to read all emails coming from your instructors, advisors, or the Undergraduate Programs and Advising office.

  • Some items that we may share with you through email include, but are not limited to:

    • Graduation Application Dates

    • New Programs (overseas study, student organizations, etc)

    • Course Cancelations, etc.

  • Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate advising questions via email.  Please call or stop by our office to make an appointment, or take advantage of walk-in hours to address advising issues.

    • If you have questions about important dates in the semester, like drop dates, please go to: IU Official Calendar

  • SPEA follows all University deadlines and policies, including, but not limited to:

    • Taking a course Pass/Fail

    • Extended Grade-X

    • Automatic W (withdrawal), etc.
