  1. Jessie Poole Climate Change and its Effects on the United States

  2. Future Effects of Climate Change on US • Rise in sea level • Rise in global average temperatures • Decrease in biodiversity • Extreme weather events • Decrease in water quality • Competition over resources

  3. Climate refugees • Climate refugee is a displaced person caused by climate change which led to natural disasters • Floods, hurricanes, tornados, cyclones, increase sea level rise, drought, increase precipitations, fires • Predicted that by 2010 there will be 50 million climate refugees • In US coastal areas are at risk • Leads to people demanded their beach front properties be insured • Leads to increased migration into inland areas of the US

  5. Loss of Energy Sources • Fossil fuels provide 85% of energy to US • non-renewable, release CO2 (coal, oil, natural gas) • Shortage of oil supply and increase in cost • Increased demand for energy • Decrease in energy sources • US needs to initiate research and begin implementing renewable energy sources • Solar, wind, biomass power sources

  6. Wedges that help reduce US impact • Efficient Building • Efficient Vehicles • Nuclear power for coal power • Reduce deforestation • Wind power for coal power • Efficient baseline coal plants • Capture CO2 at H2 plant • Reduce use of vehicles

  7. Other Wedges Outside of US • Conservation tillage • Used in developing countries that rely on agriculture for the strength of their economy • Removal of black soot from cooking technologies • Used in cooking in 3rd world countries and is 2nd largest contributor to global warming problems

  8. CDMs and Partnerships • Africa • No current CDMS. Very possible partnership to help as the developing countries progress to replace energy methods with efficient energy methods • Australasia • 13 CDM projects in Indonesia • Use of biomass • 6 of 15 wedges are being used in Australasia • Europe • Emission reduction credit • Area would benefit from funding CDMs • Germany, UK, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Sweden already fund CDMs • Hydroelectric cells, solar power, collecting methane

  9. CDMs and Partnerships Cont. • Middle East • 5 CDM projects implemented • Surplus of oil, lack of water • Nitrous oxide decomposition, fuel switch, methane recovery, and waste gas utilization • Small Islands and Arctic • Effected by sea level rise • Solar and wind power capability • Small populations make it difficult to fund CDMs and implement wedges
