  2. Who Is Srila Sanatana Goswami? Santosha (Srila Sanatana Goswami) was born in 1488 to Sri Mukunda in Jessore, East Bengal. He had two brothers Amara (Srila Rupa Goswami) and Vallabha (Anupama) Srila Rupa Goswami became the private secretary, and.. Srila Sanatana Goswami became the treasurer in the Muslim government.

  3. Meeting Caitanya Mahaprabhu • In Year of 1510, Sanatana and his brothers met Caitanya Mahaprabhu for first time. • After meeting, they all decided to renounce the world, and help Caitanya to spread Hare Krishna. • Rupa resigned, but Sanatana could not. He pretended as sick and did not go to court. • Thrown in prison by sultan. • Received letter from Rupa and bribed the jailer with money (gold coins). • Crossed Ganges and walked to Vrindavana. • Spread devotion with Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Who Is Caitanya Mahaprabhu? • Born February 18, 1486 • Son of Sri Jagannath Mishra & Smt Saci Devi • Combination of Smt Radha Rani & Sri Krishna. • MOST IMPORTANTLY SPREAD KRISHNA PREMA EVERYWHERE!! Bhagavan Krishna himself said,” O’ Brahmana, I shall appear in the VaivasvaManmantara on the shore of the holy Ganga river. I will accept the color of molten gold distributing the holy name of Lord Hari to persons from the families of dog-eaters and sweepers and shall deliver countless Brahmanas, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. I shall accept sanyasa in KancanaGramam. Vaivasvatāntare brahman gangā-tire su punya-de Hari-nāma tadā dattvā cāndālān hadikāms tathā Brāhmanān ksatriyān vaisyān śataşo ‘tha sahasraśah Uddharişyāmy aham tatra tapta svarņa kalevarah Sannyāsaś ca karişyāmi kāncana grāmam āsthitah

  5. Accomplishments • Brihat-Bhagavatam : 2,500 verses divided into 2 parts. The first part explains the hierarchy of the devotees of Sri Krishna. The second part is the soul’s journey to the place of Sri Krishna. • Hari-Bhakta Vilasa: Joint work by Sanatana Goswami and Gopala Bhatta Swami. The book explains the rituals and conducts of Gaudiya Vaishnavas. • Krishna-Lila-Stava: This is a book about Sri Krishna’s many pastimes. • Brihad Vaishnava Toshani: Extensive commentary of 10th canto of Bhagavat Purana.

Lord Caitanya & Six Goswami's • Six Goswamis were the fore-front to Gaudiya Vaishnavism • They all composed many scriptures by the mercy of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu • Srila Sanatana Goswami got special instructions from Lord Caitanya at Prayag • Unconditional love to Sri Radha & Krishna is the core of Lord Caitanya’s mission

Story of Srila Sanatana Goswami and Lord Shiva • Srila Sanatana Goswami worshipped Lord Shiva (as Sada Shiva) every day. • Both exchanged affections freely. • Walked to Mahadev Temple everyday. • When Srila Sanatana got old, Lord Shiva told him to not take the difficulty, but Sanatana insisted. • So was the bhakti of Srila Sanatana Goswami that Lord Shiva moved the temple Himself near Sanatana Goswami’s house.

Story of a Devotee of Lord Shiva • In North India, lived a poor brahmana with his family. • He had one daughter • It was time for her marriage • The brahmin needed money to conduct marriage • He prayed to Lord Shiva • That night Lord Shiva came in his dream • And told him to to Sanatana Goswami in Vrindavana

(contd) • Vrindavan far away • Finally reaches by walking for days • Brahmin is thinking Sanatana must be very rich • But villagers point to a hut • Meets Santana Goswami with doubt • Later Sanatana gives him cintamani thrown under the sand • Told brahmana that anything he touches will be gold • Brahman is over-joyed and makes go much of gold • Thanks Sanatana and walks away

  11. 2. Story of a Devotee of Lord Shiva … (contd) • As he is walking away, comes into serious doubt. • Sanatana Goswami MUST have something more important! • Why would he throw the most precious stone away? • So he walks back.

  12. 2. Story of a Devotee of Lord Shiva … (contd) • “Why have you returned?” Sanatana Goswami asked. • “This cintamani jewel cannot be the wealthiest thing you have.. I want the thing that is most precious!” • “If that is so, throw the cintamani in the river and come with me!” says Sanatana. • He takes the brahmana to his Radha Krishna deities.

  14. What is the moral of this story? One may give 10 million cows in charity at a solar eclipse; One may live in prayaga of Ganga for a whole kalpa; One may perform 10,000 yagnas and give Sumera mountain amount of gold; but these cannot be even compared to even 1/100 of the benefit of chanting GOVINDA’S name! Go-koṭi dānam grahņe khagasya Prayāga gangodaka kalpa vāsah Yajñāyutam meru svarna dānam Govinda kirter na samam śatāmśaih (Skanda Purana)
