  1. Hanford Spent Nuclear Fuel Status Presented by Sen Moy National SNF Strategy Meeting April 14, 2009

  2. Hanford SNF Status • K Basins Fuel Removal • Knock-Out Pot Material • Found Spent Nuclear Fuel • Other Near-Term Activities

  3. K Basins SNF • Final two Multi-Canister Overpacks (MCOs) containing legacy fuel from K Basins loaded, dried, and shipped to Canister Storage Building (CSB) in September 2008. • 388 MCOs containing fuel from K Basins now interim stored at the CSB.

  4. K Basin Knock-Out Pot (KOP) Sludge Material • KOP sludge material was accumulated at KW Basin during cleaning of SNF and sludge consolidation activities: • KW Basin Integrated Water Treatment System (IWTS) KOPs • IWTS Strainer Basket Canisters • Primary Cleaning Machine Canisters • KOP sludge material under evaluation to determine disposition path by FY 2011.

  5. Found Spent Nuclear Fuel • Small quantities of spent fuel discovered during remediation of B, C, D, F, and H Reactor burial grounds. • Discovery of additional fuel possible during remediation of remaining burial grounds supporting reactor operations.

  6. Found Spent Nuclear Fuel • In the past, found fuel was transferred to K Basins for consolidation with other N Reactor and single-pass reactor fuel into MCOs. • This capability through FY 2011 still exists for found fuel while the KOP material is under evaluation. • After FY 2011, a new path will be implemented to receive found fuel and storage at CSB/200 Area Interim Storage Area.

  7. Found Spent Nuclear Fuel • In new path, found fuel would be loaded into Found Fuel Containers (maximum 75 pound payload), shipped to CSB, evacuated and inerted, and closure welded. • Found Fuel Containers would then be transferred to 200 Area Interim Storage Area and emplaced in RadVault.

  8. Other Near-Term Activities • MCO license application support • OCRWM QARD Transition Activities • Completing 37 years with AEC/DOE –RL (CSRS Pension Plan-PRICELESS!)
