About FSF The Firefighters Support Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary mission is to develop, produce and distribute training programs to firefighters, EMTs, Search & Rescue personnel, and Emergency Management professionals. All of our programs are distributed free of charge.

  5. Presenter Michael D. Finney is a 25-year veteran of the fire service, having served at all ranks from Firefighter to Chief. He currently serves as the CEO for the Open Fire Academy (www.openfireacademy.org) Mr. Finney serves as faculty for American Military University, Grand Canyon University, Fairleigh-Dickinson University, and Ivy Bridge College. He previously served as the Director of Public Safety Services for Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development and the Fire Chief for the Village of Glendale, Ohio. Michael is also an adjunct instructor with the National Fire Academy for the "Fire Service Course Design" program. He has authored/edited several books and magazines in leadership and training for the fire service.

  6. What This Program Is In this program we look at initial scene size up as it relates to emergency response. We will define initial scene size up and determine when it should occur. In addition, we will explain the components of a good size up and explain the notification and communication process.

  12. What is an Initial Scene Size Up? A rapid mental evaluation of various factors related to an emergency incident. This should include ALL angles.

  13. What Does it Consist of? An initial scene size up should include: • Construction • Occupancy • Apparatus and Equipment • Life Hazard • Water Supply • Auxillary/Aids • Street Conditions • Weather • Exposures • Area • Location/Extent • Time • Height

  15. Three Simple Basic Questions • What do I have going on? • How and where is it going? • What do I need to control it?

  16. What’s in the initial transmission? • IDENTIFY your unit arriving on scene • DEFINE what you have (i.e., structure type, situation, etc.) • ESTABLISH command (use street name to better identify)
