Warm up: Answer the following questions in your interactive notebook: • Are all planets in our solar system like Earth? • Do oceans cover more of Earth than the continents? 3. Is Earth’s atmosphere made up of one gas?
Atmosphere • the mixture of gases that surrounds the solid Earth. • Gases in our atmosphere: Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, water vapor
Hydrosphere- • Water covers nearly ¾ of the Earth’s surface • Nearly 70% of the FRESH water is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps
Geosphere • all the features on Earth’s surface- continents, islands, and seafloor
Biosphere • All the living organisms on Earth • All life on Earth • Air- birds, butterflies • Land- lizards, polar bears, humans • Sea- sharks, whale, octopus, fish, algae
Layers of Earth • Crust- cool, solid rock – like shell of an egg • Mantle- hot molten rock- like silly putty • Outer core- hot liquid metal • Inner core- hot solid metal, mostly iron
Earth’s magnetic field The core is mostly iron, and the earth is spinning. This creates one large bar magnet.
Activity- Use pages A 12 B 70-71 To draw the layers of Earth Label your drawing Be sure to include: layers, thickness, temperature and composition of each layer, including state of matter
Individual work • Make vocabulary cards for terms on A9.
