  3. Law of the Sea • Governed by the United Nations • Adopted in 1994 • Defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans, establishing guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources

  4. Clean Water Act • Governed by the federal (US) government • First passed by congress in 1970 • Addresses point sources of municipal and industrial waste and spills of oil and hazardous materials

  5. Ocean Dumping Act • Governed by federal government overseen by EPA • First adopted in 1972 • Formerly known as Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act • Controls dumping of wastes at sea, research, and the establishment of marine sanctuaries

  6. Ocean Dumping Ban Act • Federal regulation overseen by the EPA • Adopted in 1988 but started being enforced in 1992 • Amends the Ocean Dumping Act • Banned all sewage and industrial-waste dumping offshore

  7. National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) • Federal program; administered by EPA • Adopted in 1970 • Requires all federally funded development projects to go through an evaluation of potential environmental impacts
