Atoms Chapter 6 Stephanie Arevalo, Mariana Herrera, Gasmen Vargas, Ramon Sanchez Per. 4
Atoms • The electrons of an atom are bound to the nucleus by the electromagnetic force. • Electromagnetic force is the force that the electromagnetic feels exerts on electrically charged particles. • It is the electromagnetic force that holds electrons and protons together in atoms and witch holds atoms mutually to make a nucleus. • The number of protons determines the chemical element and the number of neutrons determines the isotope of the element.
Atoms • All substances are made up of atoms. • Atoms are small particles that cant be created, divided, or destroyed. • Atoms of the same element are exactly alike. • Atoms of the different element are unlike. • Atoms join other atoms to make new substances.
Atoms • A group of atoms can remain bound to each other, forming a molecule. • An atom containing an equal number of protons and electrons is electrically neutral otherwise it has positive or negative charge. • An atom is classified by the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus.
