Write one interesting fact about your famous person from your reading so far on the scrap (these are things you flagged with little Post It slips or have highlighted). Quote it. Cite the page number you found it on in parentheses.

  6. Shawn McCahan "Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (97) 1. direct quotation: "Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (Pierce 97). 2. According to Pierce, "Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (97). 3. paraphrase: Oprah Winfrey has a private charity called The Oprah Winfrey Foundation that focuses on the education of women, children and families; she helps families from around the United States and throughout the world (Pierce 97).

End with the author's last name and page number in parentheses. • 2. Directly quote the author and include his or her name in the sentence. End with the page number in parentheses. • 3. Paraphrase the author's words and thoughts by summarizing the author's idea by putting it in most of your own words- NO QUOTES. End with the author's last name and page number in parentheses.

Put your name on both. Copy five quotation verbs you may use in your paper into your notebook. Get your sources out. Choose a quote from one of your sources. Do not use the same as yesterday. Now quote it two different ways (1) (2) [TRY TO USE A NEW QUOTATION VERB] and paraphrase it (3). Use the notes you got on Thursday and the practice one we did in class. Make sure you numbered the questions, and submit it to the bin. Now, if you have all four of your sources, get them read, highlighted/annotated, and half-sheeted, for me to check at the end of the period. If you still don't have all your internet sources, get a computer and log on.

  9. 4/23/14 1.8 Research Objective: to accurately quote and paraphrase from a source Next, grab one of each of the sheets on the front table. Read through the quotes and await further instructions.

  10. 4/24/14 1.8 Research Objective: to create an outline from which to write Directly quote a sentence from the passage below: OUTLINES DUE MONDAY Come See the Biggest Waves in the Northeastern U.S.! There's much summer fun to be had at Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark in Eastern PA. The rides and slides at Camelbeach range from mild to wild. Pharoah's Phortress is a family play structure with 8 waterslides, a 4-story-high tipping bucket, fountains, spray guns, and a lot more! The Titan is an enormous waterslide that stands 8 stories tall and encompasses nearly three football fields in length. Recently debuted in 2001, the Kahuna Lagoon is a giant wave pool that features the biggest waves in the Northeastern U.S.! Booking a corporate outing (i.e.: company picnic) is no problem at Camelbeach. Choose from an extensive picnic menu, which includes anything from hot dogs to New York strip steaks. Best of all, Camelbeach can accommodate parties of 50 to 10,000 people! After the park closes, you can host a Beach Bash along the water at Kahuna Lagoon. Food, beverages, entertainment, games, contests, and dancing will make it a night to remember! taken from the website FUN Pennsylvania on the third page- Article written by Steve Sightly

  11. Sightly notes, " Choose from an extensive picnic menu, which includes anything from hot dogs to New York strip steaks " (3). " Choose from an extensive picnic menu, which includes anything from hot dogs to New York strip steaks " (Sightly 3). " Choose from an extensive picnic menu, which includes anything from hot dogs to New York strip steaks," states Steve Sightly (3).

  12. Attention getter: option #1- quote from your person or about your person option #2- short anecdote (interesting story) about your person option #3- startling fact about your person option #4- three to four adjectives to describe your person Preview each body paragraph in a sentence each for example: Ellen Degeneres had a meager upbringing in New Orleans, Louisiana. (childhood) She rose to comic fame after appearing on The Tonight Show. (rise to fame) Her show Ellen is hugely popular and hilarious. (her show) She is a giving person who helps her show guests and numerous charities. (effect of society- charity work) thesis- copy from paper you got the first day of this unit when you picked your topic no "I' or "you" - very long sentence- has influence idea in it. for example: Ellen Degeneres is a funny comedian who makes people laugh; her greatest work though is not on the stage, it is the charitable work she does to help children and families. Ellen Degeneres is so funny; she gives her audience bottled water and on the label, it says “Ellen Water: It tastes funny!”

  13. Closing signal: To conclude, Furthermore, Overall, Therefore, In summary- try something NEW! Restate thesis sentence (same ideas; different words) this is my thesis: Ellen Degeneres is a funny comedian who makes people laugh; her greatest work though is not on the stage, it is the charitable work she does to help children and families. this is my restatement of it: Ellen Degeneres started her career in comedy, but after getting fame and fortune, she used her money to help those less fortunate. Review body paragraphs (this can be one, two, or three sentences) for example (one sentence): Ellen Degeneres had a middle class upbringing, a quick rise to fame, and a successful talk show that is still running today. for example (two sentences): Ellen Degeneres had a middle class upbringing. After a quick rise to fame, she launched a successful talk show that is still running today. Review influence paragraph topic for example: Degeneres is involved in many charities and gives away tons of gifts to audience members in need. What can we learn from him or her (this is the implication, solution, suggestion) Degeneres talks a lot about tolerance of differences and gives of her money freely; more people should live their lives the way Ellen does. Poignant Concluding Sentence - go back to your attention getter and find a way to link it your topic My attention getter was: Funny, smart, and giving are three words to describe comedian Ellen Degeneres. My PCS: Ellen may be funny and smart, but her giving personality is why everyone should want to meet her some day!

  14. 4/29/14 1.8 Research Objective: to review MLA format to type a works cited page Get your outline out. Put it on the upper left corner of your desk. Paraphrase an idea from this passage: One of the Great Waterparks in PA! By Linda Shuck The summer is not complete without a visit to one of PA's great water parks. Knoebels PA water park is great fun for the whole family. The waterpark's Crystal Pool has all sorts of waterslides and diving boards for your summer pleasure. One of the best rides is Skloosh!, a 16-passenger rubber craft that gets carried up a steep incline and launched down a water ramp. There's even a water park just for your little ones, as they can swim around in shallow water, enjoy fountains, and much more. Once you're done cooling off at the water park, you can dry off at one of the many roller-coasters and other amusement park rides at Knoebels. Best of all, admission is free! ~this article was on a website called travelPA.com on page 9

  15. I paraphrased this idea, “The waterpark's Crystal Pool has all sorts of waterslides and diving boards for your summer pleasure.” The Crystal Pool at Knoebel’s Amusement Resort has many waterslides and diving boards to cool you off on hot summer days (Shuck 9).

SINGLE space all citations, but double space between entries. Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations to create a hanging indent. ONLY PUT SOURCES ON THE WORKS CITED PAGE THAT YOU QUOTED OR PARAPHRASED FROM! For most of you this will be two sources (maybe three)

  17. Type your paper from your outline. Works Cited page is last. Open your Works Cited page from Tuesday and begin typing ABOVE your Works Cited title. MLA FORMAT NOTES * typed* double spaced throughout (except individual bibliography entries)* Times New Roman font* size 12 font* one inch margins all around* number pages in upper right header* Include your last name with the page number in the upper right corner (header) * have a title and center it- no bold, no underline, no quotes, no ALL CAPS* in the upper left of the first page: your name, my name, class, date (military style) ``
