  1. Bellwork#10 – COPY question and your answer If you talk during the bellwork I will turn it off and you will all lose 5 pts. Which statement describes the relationship of a samurai to a daimyo? • Daimyo hired samurai to defend them and their property • Samurai hired daimyo to defend them and their property • Daimyo paid samurai in slaves • Daimyo had to obey every command of their samurai lord.

  2. Bushido: The Way of the Warrior • Samurai followed Bushido, which means “the way of the warrior.” • Both men and women of samurai families learned how to fight, but only men went to war. Women protected their homes from robbers. • They lived simple and disciplined lives. Many practiced Zen Buddhism and wrote 17 syllable poems called Haiku. • Obeying their lord was the most important thing for their sense of honor.

  3. Tokugawa Shogunate • Daimyo, who owned most of the land, fought to break away from the shoguns’ power. Small wars broke out all over Japan. • In 1603 Japan’s emperor made Tokugawa shogun. He reunified Japan • The rule by one family lasted until 1868. During their rule, Japan traded with other countries and let Christian missionaries live in Japan. • Later shoguns closed off Japan from the rest of the world and banned guns. This helped extend the samurai period in Japan until the 1800s.
