Mission Addition Especially for Mrs. Saeler’s Kindergarteners!
March 14, 2013 Dear Kindergarteners, We have some bad news. Recently we have found that many people do not remember how to do addition. We know that this week you all have been learning addition and we need your help. Because you are so smart we need you to teach our math team how to do addition before this skill is lost forever! Will you accept this mission?
Welcome to the Team! You all have officially become an
Before we get started you will need all of your special equipment. On your desk you have a folder which has all of these top secret documents. • Addition Agent Badge • Addition Definition • Key Addition Terms • Counting Hands Sheet • Number Line Sheet • Addition Practice Sheet
First: You need to write your name on your badge so you can become an official member of the team! Miss Sarah
Second: We need to make sure we know the meaning of the word: Addition Does anyone know what addition means? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
We have been singing about addition during calendar time. Let’s see if our song will remind us some things about addition! click on the notes
Let’s pull out of Addition Definition sheet so we can document it for our team!
Let’s check our definition online before we write it down! click on the book joining two numbers to make one sum
We also want to make sure that we understand what a sum is!!! Do you know? click on the book answer
Wow! Thanks, Addition Agents! Now that I know these definitions I think I am starting to get the hang of this!
Third: We need to know what key words unlock the addition problems! Pull out the key sheet!
Keys help unlock things. Our keys will help remind us when we use addition! click on the key
Our firstkey will say add. Add up the shirts! Add + =
Our second key will say altogether. If you add my two dogs with Doug’s dog how many dogs do we have altogether? Altogether + =
Our third key will say both. Tim has 2 marbles and Mark has 3. How many marbles do both boys have? Both + =
Our fourth key will say in all. I got 4 scoops of ice cream and my mom got 2 scoops. How many scoops of ice cream are there in all? In All + =
Our fifth key will say sum. Carol has one book and bought two more. What is the sum? Sum = +
Our sixth key will say total. There are two frogs on a lily pad and one frog in a silly hat. How many total frogs are there? Total + =
Hmmmmm… These key terms really help when picking out addition problems!!!
Now that we know how to identify addition problems we need a plan on how to solve them! Pull out your counting hands sheet! Fourth:
Fingers can be a great way to help with addition! Let’s find out how! click on the magnifying glass
Who knew you could use your fingers for addition? You all are so smart!
Now that we can count with our hands let’s learn a new way! Pull out your number line sheet! Fifth:
When using a number line you set the frog on the first number. Then the frog jumps the second number. What he lands on is the answer! 2 + = 3 5
We are almost finished! We want to make sure we completely understand addition before ending our mission! Pull out your practice sheet to see how much we have learned!! Sixth:
7 4 6 9
Congratulations You Completed Mission Addition!
