  2. What is a Personal Narrative? • A form of writing in which the writer relates an event , incident, or experience in his or her own life. It incorporates vivid descriptive details as well as the thoughts,  feelings, and reactions of the writer.

  3. Choosing a Topicprewriting • Will your audience be . . . • A specific person? • Friends and family? • A particular age group? • A general audience? Determine who you are writing for before you start writing!

  4. Choosing a Topicprewriting • The purpose of your personal narrative is . . . • To entertain? • To reveal something about yourself? • To inform? • To shine light on a matter that is important to you? • Plan for a purpose for your personal narrative

  5. Work Period • Brainstorm three to five experiences that might make good subjects for a personal narrative. Experiences might include a sickness or injury, preparing for a game or performance, achieving a milestone, facing a problem, a memorable vacation, etc. Write these down on a sheet of paper, each with a short explanation. • Meet and share with the members of your group and then whole group to discuss topics

  6. Characteristics of the Personal Narrative •  Focuses on a single incident • Has a clear purpose, which is clear to the reader • Is written in first person • Has many relevant sensory details (5 senses) • Includes the author's feelings and thoughts • Often includes dialogue

  7. Parts of the Personal Narrative • A beginning that grabs the reader's interest • A middle that tells about important events, describes people and places, and tells the writer's thoughts and feelings. • An ending in which the writer explains the outcome and shows the meaning of the experience and what they learned from it.
