  1. How long does it take to complete a thyroid gland needle biopsy? A thyroid biopsyperformed to attain tissue for analysis is a wonderful technique for identifying or discovering the presence of thyroid cancer. For years, a core thyroid biopsy was the process of choice. This procedure involved a biopsy which was usually more difficult for patients. Fine- needle aspiration biopsy has now become the procedure of choice for getting samples of thyroid tissue. The method is technically really simple. When performed correctly, the testing has a false-negative rate of less than 5 per cent which means that a positive finding like cancer will be missed lesser than 5 times out of 100. Fine-needle aspiration is also conducted to treat thyroid cysts. A thyroid cyst is kind of a sac filled with fluids within the thyroid gland. Aspiration of the cist with a fine needle and syringe shrinks the swelling caused due to the cyst and the fluid flushed can later be observed for cancer. The majority of patients experience very little bleeding or swelling. They may feel a little discomfort in the area for a while after the biopsy which can be easily relieved with acetaminophen. Patients can also apply ice over the area when they get home. The risk of a fine-needle aspirationthyroid biopsy may include infection, bleeding or cyst formation but these issues are rare. Patients should contact their doctor if they see any excessive swelling or bruising in the area of the biopsy or if they are experiencing persistent pain in the area. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland is an extremely effective method to find whether a thyroid nodule is a cancerous or not. This is a relatively simple method that is generally conducted in a doctor’s office and takes approximately 20 minutes. The chances of complications are rare but include bruising, bleeding and infection. Results are usually given within a week.
