The need for skilled developers and IT professionals is greater than ever • The fastest-growing occupation in the next decade is projected to be computer software engineers • IT is one of America's fastest growing industries • In the U.S. alone, 1.5 million additional skilled IT professionals are expected to be needed by 2006 • Approximately 70 million Baby Boomers will exit the workforce during the next 15 years, with only 40 million workers coming in * Watson Wyatt, Monster.com; U.S. Department of Labor; Bureau of Labor Statistics; Information Technology Association of America IBM Academic Initiative

San Jose State University (SJSU) Partnership Executive: Jon Iwata Relationship Manager: Sharon McFadden John Aufhammer Technical Enablement: Willy Farrell Challenge The Management Information Systems Department within the College of Business recognized unmet potential in exposing their students to the open standards and open source technologies critical to their career goals, particularly in Silicon Valley. Solution IBM created a 3 day custom software enablement training for the MIS faculty with a focus on IBM’s Rational tools and DB2 and provided technical support to get the tools up and running in the labs & department. Rational and DB2 were quickly integrated into the curriculum and are currently being taught with an eye toward broad expansion, across the program, as a platform for student project portfolios. Value SJSU MIS students now will graduate with an appreciation of the open paradigm and a broader knowledge of the tools they are likely to encounter in the field. Acting Chair, Tim Hill reports “an immediate value-added impact on the quality of our program and, by extension, our graduates, in term of the depth and breath of their knowledge and skills.” Results All MIS students now get exposure to open source and IBM technologies, enhancing their prospects for hiring and long term career success.
