Information of SAP • Founded in 1972 • Headquarters: Walldorf, Germany • Main product focus is on ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) • SAP Business Suit is the company’s main product • Employees: 48,471
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) • ERP is a software architecture whose purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders • An ERP system can be implemented in two ways: • Centralized Server • Distributed across modular hardware and software units • Businesses can save on costs by using the distributed ERP method by assembling modules from different vendors, allowing them to not buy expensive computer systems in areas which will not use full capacity
Information about Sybase • Founded in 1984 • Headquarters: Dublin, California • Product Focus: • Before 2006, Data management products • After 2006, slowly shifted focus towards mobile applications • Employees: 3,819
Reasoning Behind the Acquisition • Since SAP is the world leading provider of enterprise software, and Sybase is an industry leader in developing business and mobile software, SAP found it in their interest to acquire Sybase, and develop a mobile SAP business suite • Both companies are expected to benefit from the merger
Good move by SAP? • Companies are constantly partnering with other companies in the same industry • Due to the spike in mobility, more and more corporations are devoting resources towards mobile applications • Stock Price of Sybase (NYSE: SY) after the announcement: $64.47+22.88 +55.1%
