REFERENCE NFHS RULE 6ARTICLE 3 (cont) • … center player in the corresponding row (except the server and the center back of the serving team). • Each left-side player shall have at least part of one foot touching the floor closer to the left sideline that both feet of the center player in the corresponding row.

  14. IDENTIFYING THE OFFENSE • SYSTEM USED TO DIRECT THE BALL TOWARDS OPPONENT’S COURT • OFFENSE USUALLY DEFINED BY TWO NUMBERS • First identifies total number of hitters in the offense • Second identifies number of setters in the offense

IDENTIFYING THE OFFENSE • EXAMPLES INCLUDE • 6 – 0 Everyone hits; everyone sets (from MF) • 6 – 2 Everyone hits; 2 designated back-row setters who hit when in front row • 4 – 2 Four Hitters; 2 designated front-row setters (from MF) • 5 – 1 Five Hitters; 1 designated setter (all the way around) • Int’l 4 – 2 Front row setters are at the RF • Modified 5 – 1 Substitution of setters FR / BR

CONSIDERATIONS • SETTER • Not receiving serve • Penetrating into “Setting Zone” as much as possible • Uses second contact to deliver ball to attacker • Second setter can be a passer, but not preferred option • OUTSIDE HITTER • Both OHs usually receive serve • Position the front row OH close to attack zone

  25. MORE CONSIDERATIONS • LIBERO • Almost always next best option as a passer • “Contrasting” jersey makes them easy to follow • DS • Another good passing option • Usually into back row for OHs having a bad day • MIDDLE BLOCKERS • Not so much; usually minimize their ball handling

BUILDING THE ROTATION • START WITH THE SETTER • Already know that opposite player will be “Second Setter” (“Opposite” or “RS”) • IDENTIFY PLAYERS ON EITHER SIDE OF SETTER • OH on one side of Setter • Other OH will be opposite • Maybe a DS in the Back Row • MB on other side of Setter • Other MB will be opposite • Libero replacement in Back Row

  29. DIRECTING YOUR FOCUS • WHERE ARE THE POSITIONAL PLAYERS IN THE ROTATION?? • WHO NEEDS TO BE SOMEWHERE AND WHY?? • WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO DO TO GET THERE?? • WHO IS AROUND TO AFFECT THEIR MOVEMENTS??

THINGS THAT WILL HELP • CREATE A MENTAL PICTURE OF THE CURRENT ROTATION • Visualize moving the players around • FIND TIME TO DRAW THEM OUT • Different people learn differently • Drawing the picture is better than looking at the picture • LINE UP CARDS • Great aid for new officials and the unsure
