  1. Welcome Parents! Ohio's New Learning Standards

  2. What are Common Core Standards? • Guidelines that describe what children are to learn in each subject and grade • What each child should know and be able to do at the end of the school year • Each step is a skill students need to learn before going on to the next Ohio Department of Education

  3. Common Core State Standards • Include English Language Arts and Math • Created through a partnership of educators around the country • Adopted by Ohio and approximately 46 other states • Ohio has developed its own more rigorous science and social studies standards Ohio Department of Education

Why Are Ohio's New Learning Standards Important? • Ensure that all students are prepared for success in college and the workforce • Clear roadmap for teachers, parents, and students • Clearly defined goals • Families and teachers can work together toward student success • Develop critical thinking skills to prepare students to be college and career ready

  6. Change - It's a Good Thing! There are major changes, or “shifts,” in what teachers will teach.

  7. How Are the New English Language Arts Standards Different? English Language Arts • Students spend more time reading to find facts and information in texts • Read to find evidence • Students learn to read and write about text that becomes more challenging over time Ohio Department of Education

  9. Next Generation Assessments • Replace the OAA and OGT • OGT will be phased out through class of 2016 • Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) • Assesses Common Core (ELA and Math) • State developed assessments • Assesses Science and Social Studies
