We are referring to a common scalp condition called dandruff which affects a large number of people in this world. Every tissue of our body is comprised of cells, these cells constantly degenerate and are replaced by new cells. When skin cells in the scalp die more rapidly than new ones are produced, this gives rise to scaly white patches in the scalp called dandruff. This can be accompanied by redness and irritation. This condition can be long lasting and can recur at periodic intervals of time. Repetitive scratching of hair can even lead to hair loss in most individuals. Dandruff equally affects both genders. Seasonal variations can precipitate the intensity of this condition. Dandruff flakes can be categorized as dry skin related dandruff, oil related dandruff, fungal dandruff, or any underlying disease. Some of the common causes of dandruff may be: Due to excessive oil (sebum) production on the scalp, they combine with dead cells causing itching.
