  1. Beam InstrumentsPSB + Transfer Lines B. Mikulec, J-F. Comblin

  2. Scope • Overview of beam instruments • Installed in PSB injection line (BI line) • Installed in PSB rings (BR) • Installed in PSB extraction lines (BT, BTP, BTM, BTY) • Operational/development/obsolete • Criticality • Other issues • Beam instrumentation to be installed for the PSB upgrade (LIU-PSB) not mentioned here BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  3. PSB Injection • Splitting into 4 PSB rings downstream of BI.SMV10 • (synoptics still to be updated for naming changes…) • LT+LTB lines are under Linac2 responsibility BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  4. BI (PSB Injection) Line All instruments except BLMs are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  5. PSB Rings • Only sections 7-11 (out of 16 PSB sections) are shown here as example… BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  6. PSB Rings – Pickups r=1…4 (PSB ring number) All instruments are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014 * Critical for performance: PSB could operate without the instrument for a limited time.

  7. PSB Rings – Intensity/Current r=1…4 (PSB ring number) All instruments are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  8. PSB Rings – Other Instruments r=1…4 (PSB ring number) All instruments except BLMs are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  9. BT Line • Complex recombination 4  2  1 ring… BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  10. BT (PSB Transfer) Line All instruments except BLMs are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  11. BTP Line • Wall between PSB and PS tunnels BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  12. BTP (PSB Transfer to PS) Line All instruments are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  13. BTM Line • PSB measurement line (emittance measurement) and PSB dump. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  14. BTM (PSB to Measurement) Line All instruments are declared in layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  15. BTY Line • Splitting into ISOLDE GPS and ISOLDE HRS targets at the end. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  16. BTY (PSB to ISOLDE) Line The BTY line is not yet declared in the layout DB. BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  17. Instrument Summary BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  18. Conclusions • 278 BI equipment currently installed in PSB complex (187 without BLMs) • Practically all installed instruments in the PSB are critical for operation. • Many instrument modifications (equipment + electronics + software) during LS1. • New instruments for LS2. • Instruments in layout DB except for BTY line and certain BLMs; will follow • Optics have been updated • Positions are currently being corrected in layout DB • GEODE will be updated with new names BOSS mini-workshop 27/05/2014

  19. Beam off • BRr.BCTDC9L1: beam intensity in the rings; also used for ISOLDE+EAST beams intensity interlock • BRr.BCW8L1: essential for bunch synchronisation • BRr.BPTF4L5: no high intensity beams in case of failure • BPMs in extraction lines: failure of 1 can be worked around short-term, but need to compensate with others (recombination and bunch spacing) • BCTs in extraction lines: failure of 1 can be worked around short-term, but need to compensate with others • BLMs in extraction lines: could probably live a few days with one broken (would need to be removed from interlock!)
