Teachers • Teachers’ websites and blogs--parents and students can subscribe and be notified each time the website/blog is updated • Weekly e-mails to parents regarding upcoming assignments/projects • Make-up notebooks in classrooms with handouts for each assignment each nine weeks • Assignment due date calendars posted in classroom and teachers’ websites/blogs

Teachers • Study guides for tests and exams • After school and SOL tutoring with transportation provided 3 times per week • Increased and ongoing parental contact regarding students’ progress—three tiered: Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators • Classroom presentations/discussions with students regarding student performance data at each interim and nine weeks

  6. parents • Ongoing contact with teachers, guidance, and administrators regarding their child’s progress • Utilization of parent connection to monitor grades and attendance • Utilization of teachers’ websites and blogs • Utilization of NRHS Daily Announcement blog to keep informed of events

  7. STUDENTS • Comply with school policies/rules • Complete assignments on time • Obtain make-up work when absent • Come prepared for class daily

  8. Administrators • Implementation of attendance policy where attendance is monitored at every interim and nine week period. • Use of computer based programs (Nova Net and Odyssey) to assist rising ninth graders/seniors with on-time graduation

Administrators • Ongoing parental contact regarding students’ progress—three tiered: Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators • Staff mentoring program—Administration and staff members mentor/tutor students at all grade levels every two weeks-- 50 students were mentored by 9 staff members in 2010-2011: • 30 seniors were mentored and all graduated • 20 underclassmen were mentored--15 passed classes for promotion; 4 enrolled in GED programs; and 1 dropped out. • The Data Team generates failure reports at each interim and nine week period and administrators, counselors, and teachers conduct student/parent conferences for those who are failing classes • Increasing parent enrollment in parent connection for students that are failing

  10. counselors • Meetings with EACH term graduate and his/her parent(s) to ensure the student and parent(s) understand and are advancing toward meeting graduation requirements • Sending two letters home for seniors in danger of not graduating • End of first semester (required by school division) • End of third nine weeks (additional requirement for NRHS) • Providing Guidance Information Nights • Senior Information Night • Scheduling Night • AP/DC Information Night • Junior Information Night

  11. counselors • Freshman Transition Program • Visiting John Yeates Middle School to discuss freshman classes, SOL’s, graduation requirements, and transitioning to high school • New tracking system for students transferring to other school divisions. Documentation is maintained each nine weeks verifying student transfers • Ongoing parental contact regarding students’ progress—three tiered: Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators • Individualized conferences with each senior regarding graduation, post-secondary plans, and current grades

NANSEMOND RIVER HIGH SCHOOL FUTURE PLANS FOR INCREASING GRADUATION RATE Explore the option of providing computer based programs after school/night school and summer school at each high school and offer both core and elective classes that students may need for on time graduation Explore the option of providing GED classes (daytime / after school hours) at each high school
