  2. The Presidential Elections The President of the Finnish Republic has been elected directly by the people in general elections since 1994. The presidential elections are held every sixth year . If the incumbent President dies or becomes permanently incapable to continue in his office, a new president will be elected as soon as possible.

  3. -The presidential candidates can be nominated by registered parties that have received at least one seat in the preceding parliamentary elections. - The president must be a native Finnish citizen. The term of office is six years. The same person may be elected president for a maximum of two consecutive terms. - A presidential candidate can also be nominated by at least 20 000 supporters within a constituency.

  4. - The first round of voting in the presidential elections takes place on the fourth Sunday of January. If one of the candidates receives more than half of the votes, he or she will be declared President. Otherwise, the second round of voting will be held two weeks later between the two leading candidates from the first round. The candidate who receives the majority of votes in the second round will be declared President. -The inauguration of the President takes place on the first day of the month following the elections. The presidential oath is given both in Finnish and in Swedish in front of the Finnish Parliament.
