  2. Stakeholder & Customer & User • Client: Someone who is telling us to carry out the design • Customer: Someone who will purchase the design • User: Someone who will use the design

  3. Stakeholder & Customer & User • Our problem : To work on making energy harvesters for mobile phones. • MP3 players and book lights : Requirements to design and produce the energy harvesters may be improbable for the given time, skills and funds. There may be a smaller market than the mobile phones and other devices

  4. Stakeholder & Customer & User

  5. Assigned tasks for each member

  6. Assigned tasks for each member • Interviewing group [carry out the interviews] (2~3people) • Surveying group [carry out the surveys] (3~4people) • Organizing group [organize the data and typing] • Research • Typing

  7. Interview & Survey

  8. Survey & Interview Contents • Book light(survey) • MP3/Phone(survey) • Mechanisms of piezo-crystals and other materials to produce energy and about each of the devices(interview)

  9. Target for Survey & Interview Survey Interview • Kaist students • Other students in Korea, or overseas • Professors • Random individuals. • graduate students • TAs, PA • Professors in charge of mechatronics/mechanical engineering/electrical engineering/material engineering areas.

  10. Survey1 (Book light)

  11. Introduction • The survey is for the Freshman Design Course at Kaist. The project is to design energy harvesters for portable electronic devices. This survey will mainly concentrate on the portable device being book light. • Book light: A device used to read books or other texts in environments with limited light source. This is relatively energy efficient as its main function is the lighting of LED lights in the device and as it is relatively light and compact in size, it is good for its transportation. Also due to its size it can be used in various reading positions making it flexible to carry around and use

  12. Age • Under 15 • 15~20 • 20~25 • 25~30 • Over 30 • Have you ever used book light before • Yes • No • What kinds of characteristics do you look at for book lights? • DesignColor • Size • Mass • Price • Functions

  13. How big do you think they should be? • Size of a wallet • Size of university textbooks • Ordinary novel book size • Size of a bag • How long do you spend outside? (Walking outside) • Under 1hour • 1~2hours • 2~3hours • 3~4hours • Over 4hours

  14. Up to how much are you willing to pay? • Under \30,000 • \30,000~50,000 • \50,000~70,000 • \70,000~100,000 • \100,000~150,000 • Have you had an experience where you could not read due to lack of light? • Yes • No

  15. In what kind of environment do you read books? • Dark • Dim • Normal • Bright • Very Bright • For how long do you read books in a day? • Under 1hour • 1~2hours • 2~3hours • 3~4hours • Over 4hours • In which position do you like to read books? • Sitting • Lying • Standing

  16. Survey2 (Mobile Phone/MP3)

  17. Introduction • The survey is for the Freshman Design Course at Kaist. The project is to design energy harvesters for portable electronic devices. This survey will mainly concentrate on the portable device being Mobile phone/MP3. • Mobile phone: A device used mainly to make calls or send text messages to communicate with other people. • MP3: A device which allows the user to store and listen to music and video.

  18. Age • Under 15 • 15~20 • 20~25 • 25~30 • Over 30Possess a mobile phone • Yes • No • Possess an MP3 or any other music players • Yes • No

  19. Which do you use more? • Mobile phone • MP3 • How long do you use a mobile phone a day? (any activity involving mobile phone) • Under 1hour • 1~2hours • 2~3hours • 3~4hours • Over 4hours

  20. How long do you use an MP3 a day? • Under 1hour • 1~2hours • 2~3hours • 3~4hours • Over 4hours • Did you have any situations where you had a problem due to the battery running out for the above devices? • Yes • No

  21. How much time do you spend a day to charge up your battery for the above device (The one you use more) • Under 1hour • 1~2hours • 2~3hours • 3~4hours • Over 4hours • If the device could charge by itself, how much more are you willing to pay when you are purchasing it? • Under \10,000 • \10,000~20,000 • \20,000~40,000 • \40,000~80,000 • \80,000~\10,000

  22. Which aspect of the mobile phone or mp3 do you look at when purchasing them? • Design • Size • Mass • Color • Function • Cost

  23. Interview Questions • Mechanism of piezoelectric materials • The amount of energy gained from the piezo • Applications of piezoelectric materials in our lives • Efficiency and cost • The way to store energy produced by piezo

  24. Methods to keep the brightness of the LED even • Whether the energy is enough for charging
