Project stemming the tide sonia isaacs project coordinator
Project – Stemming the TideSonia Isaacs – Project Coordinator

  • A program run by St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, to diagnose, treat and care for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

  • It is free and has no governmental funding.

  • Emphasis on testing pregnant women to prevent transmission of the disease from mother to child.

FREE SERVICES OFFERED:

  • HIV testing and counseling

  • Food voucher program

  • Home Based care program started in 2006

  • In March 2007 a Hospice Centre was opened

  • Follow up care incl. drugs, lab tests, x-ray etc.

  • Program can now provide holistic patient care - treatment at the acute phase, continuity phase, rehab and end of life and home based care.

  • In 2007, program expanded to Davis Memorial and Bartica Hospital

MOBILE CLINIC

  • Provides local communities with free medical services to low or no-income families

  • 2008 was the 12th Anniversary of this service and need keeps growing.

  • Supported 100% by donations

  • 90% of patients served earn less than G$13,000 p.a. = US$66. Remaining 10% earn less than G$25,000 p.a. = US$126



Mobile clinic2
MOBILE CLINIC

  • Host Health Fairs in local communities to educate on subjects of diet, hypertension, diabetes and other health issues.

  • In 2008, another area of service added – Princess street residents living near a garbage dump site. Health affected by daily burning of garbage.

  • Grief and coping skills counseling offered, especially to the elderly

  • GMR funded $5,000 in 2006 and $10,000 in 2007, $5,000 in 2008 and committed $5,000 for 2009.



Project deskan medical mission
Project – Deskan Medical Mission

  • Deskan Institute and Training, Inc. – a non-profit organization in Atlanta, led by Guyanese – Dr. Joan Liverpool.

  • 2008 marked the 6th Volunteer Medical and Training mission to Guyana.

  • Focus on education on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS/STD/TB and other infections, as well as medical treatment.

  • Continued outreach to Amerindian communities on a variety of health issues.

  • Medical Mission conducted in July – August 2008.

  • Served approx. 450 adults and children

  • Communities served: St. Cuthbert's Mission, Kuru Kururu, Craig/Grove village and Buxton.

  • GMR 2008 Funding was $3,000 and commitment for 2009 is also $3,000
