Believed that everything in today’s world was created by the Ancestral Being during a period called Dreamtime. Traditionally the paintings were made as part of a ritual and than destroyed. Artists designs are “ found” not created. Aboriginal art is made by the native people of Australia
Artists use materials such as bark, sand, rocks, the human body and painted with natural pigments. Paintings express their harmony with nature.
Artists use patterns throughout the paintings such as bands, dots, circles. Background often contains pattern but animal is usually the focal point.
Painted in simple earth tones such asbrown, black, red and white.
Figures are stylized Stylized- object reduced down to its most basic shapes.
Sticks are often tied to the paintings as a framing and hanging device.
Pattern painting design requirementsPrint out slide and follow as a checklist • Animal as a focal point. • Contrasting overall patterns such as stripes vs. dots or cross-hatching vs. circles, etc. • Background must contain pattern but may be abstract or natural objects like plants, ocean, sun, moon, weather, figures. • X-ray style showing pattern inside objects not literal skeleton. • Must have dots and circles. • All shapes must be stylized. • Color is earth tones only-red, brown, black, white. • Paper must be stained with tea or mud. • Sticks tied to top and bottom of painting. • Dimensions are 36 inches tall. Width is open be painting cannot be a square.
Painting process in chronological order • Cut paper from large roll-paper is 36” tall-cut width any size except 36”-no square paintings. • Crumble sheet of paper to flatten and create texture. • Stain paper with tea or mud and let dry overnight. • Print out picture of animal you want to depict. • Sketch out images in a stylized manner-see next slide Picasso Bull image and/or Aboriginal art handout. • Add pattern in animal ( X-ray ) and background using black pens and paint. • Finish by putting holes in top and bottom of paper and attach sticks with string. • Check design requirements checklist.
