  1. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Chemistry… • The study of the composition of matter and the changes it undergoes. • During this class: • Students will participate in a lot of laboratory activities (I believe we learn science best by doing it!) • Students will practice college readiness skills. • Students will connect chemistry concepts to the real world.

  2. Example of something you’ll be able to explain by the end of the year… We will do this lab later…

  3. Meet Ms. Morgan… • Graduated from ASU Taught middle school math and science in Mississippi. • Students grew 1 year on ACT Assessments in one semester • Students grew 2 years in Mathematics in one semester. • Student taught and long-term substituted at Mountain Pointe High School in Ahwatukee, Arizona for Biology and Biotechnology classes. • Born in South Carolina, grew up in Chicago, went to high school and college in Arizona (Go Sun Devils!), then moved to Mississippi, and now I am back.

  4. Big Class Goals… • Students will grow 5 Points on the ACT. • Students will master all chemistry standards at 80%. • Students will apply chemistry concepts to explain natural phenomenon. • Students will develop communication, critical thinking, interpersonal, and problem solving skills through laboratory work.

  5. Classroom Guidelines… • BE SAFE • LEARN SOMETHING • MAKE FRIENDS • HAVE FUN

  6. Classroom Website • Our classroom website is a work in progress but it is where you can find daily activities and extra practice for concepts. The website address is: http://qchschem.weebly.com (WRITE THIS ON YOUR SYLLABUS)

  7. Sign Up For Chemistry Class Alerts… • General Chemistry • Text @qchschem to (520) 332 - 6084 • Honors Chemistry • Text @qchshchem to (520) 332 – 6084 (WRITE THIS ON YOUR SYLLABUS)

  8. Your future doctors thank you in advance! Donations Appreciated • Printer Paper. • Tissues • Empty Metal Coffee Cans • Empty 5 Gallon Water Jugs • Zip Lock Bags • Pencils • Empty 2 Liter Soda Bottles • Dry Erase Markers • Pretty much anything you think we can use… (WRITE THIS STUFF DOWN ON YOUR SYLLABUS)

  10. Supplies For Chemistry (DUE MON) • 3” 3 – ring binder • Approximately 20 Binder Dividers (one for Current Work and one per each unit) • Loose leaf paper • Pens & pencils • Scientific calculator

  11. Attention Getting Signal?

  12. Where to pick up handouts?

  13. Are there any questions? • Supplies DUE MON • Syllabus DUE MON • Student Survey DUE MON • Parent Survey DUE MON

  14. Closure • What is the new school late work policy? • What do you need to do if you’re struggling in Chemistry? • What percent of your grade is lab work? • What supplies do you need for class? If you are absent for one day how long do you have to makeup work?
