DS Upgrade • Create space for additional collimators by replacing 8.33 T MB with 11 T Nb3Sn dipoles compatible with LHC lattice and main systems. • 119 Tm @ 11.85 kA (in series with MB) • Joint development program between CERN and FNAL underway since Oct-2010. • LS2 : IR-2 • 2/4 MB => 4/8 x 5.5 m CM + spares • LS3 : IR-1,5 and Point-3,7 • 4 x 4 MB => 32 x 5.5 m CM + spares MB.B8R/L MB.B11R/L 15,66 m (IC to IC plane) 11 T Nb3Sn 3 m Collim 5.5 m Nb3Sn 5.5 m Nb3Sn 5.5 m Nb3Sn 3 m Collim. 5.5 m Nb3Sn M.   4. 11 T Dipole Project Goals • Demonstrate the feasibility of Nb3Sn technology for the DS collimation upgrade with an accelerator quality 5.5-m-long twin-aperture 11 T prototype dipole by 2015 • Design and construct 15.6-m-long cryo-assembly comprising the 11 T dipole and collimator compatible with LHC lattice and main systems • Prepare for the series production of 11 T collimator cryo-assemblies according to the LHC upgrade schedule • Ultimately deliver 2 fully tested cryo-assembly units for IR2(* during LS2 and 16 units for the LS3 (IR1,5 and Point-3,7) *)Present understanding prioritizing the ion run over Point-7 and protons.   5. Project Status and Plans • Emphasis currently on the short model magnet development to master the Nb3Sn technology and validate the magnet design • Two short 1-in-1 magnets tested at FNAL. First CERN model magnet test expected in March -14 • Work on scale-up to 5.5 m magnets has commenced and first long magnet test expected in 2015 • Cold mass and cryo-assembly integration studies are in progress • Machine integration studies in progress (beam dynamics, protection, beam losses) or first pre-studies made (powering, vacuum, cryogenics,..) (* *)Cold collimator feasibility WG chaired by V. Parma M. Karppinen 6 Nov -14
