2. Assessment of Improved Pulverizer Technology Objective – Identify existing pulverization technology and develop criteria for utilizing these technologies for rapid stabilization of soil layers used in airfield construction.
Scope - Evaluate the three types of pulverization/stabilization rotors. Equipment was evaluated on three different material types located at WES.
3. Plan/Progress/Approach Plan (FY03)
Evaluate performance of different rotor types on various materials
Materials used for evaluation
CH (heavy clay, buckshot)
ML (low plasticity clay)
SP (poorly graded sand)
Types of pulverizers / mixers
Tine type mixer
Soil stabilization type
Combination
Plan (FY04)
Evaluate performance of selected rotor on mixing liquid or powder stabilizing agents
Participate in FY04 Demonstration Optimize number of tests – this is balancing the number of tests with knowledge of the construction material. Few tests will be best for time concerns. Many tests will provide the most knowledge.
Identify significant spatial differences – if there is a relatively weak area within a “feature”, it must be strengthened. If the entire feature is immediately considered as a single population, the weak area may go undetected. All weak measurements within an area is a much different situation than when weak measurements are scattered throughout a feature.
