  3. WHAT COMMUNITIES HAVE OFFERED • Security • A sense of identity and belonging • A framework of shared assumptions and values • A network of caring individuals. • The experience of being needed

  4. THE BEGINNING OF THE BREAKDOWN OF THE COMMUNITY • The rise of easy transportation systems • The spread of better and better communication.

  5. RELATED CAUSES • Individualistic culture • Excessive competitiveness • Emphasis on individual performance. • Impersonal contacts with one another • Telephone ordering • Computer ordering • ATMs

  6. What are the consequences of this shift? • The breakdown of the family • People suffer isolation, alienation, and estrangement • A steady stream through the court system, psychiatrists’ office and drug abuse clinics • It starts in the inner city and spreads through the suburbs. • The poor feel the consequences more than the rich

  7. POOR SOLUTIONS • A Charity mentality • Racial Polarization • Socio-economic polarization • Government programs – replacing church involvement

  8. THE REGENERATION OF THE COMMUNITY • Remove the barriers that exist within the church. • Rekindle the value of the group without loosing the individual pride. • Reinsert the Church into the center of the community.

  9. DEVELOPING MEANINGFUL PROGRAMMING FOR YOUR COMMUNITY • Look for the felt needs rather than Quick Fixes. • Preach and Teach the church people that they are ministers of reconciliation. • Clearly outline the needs of the community. • Prioritize the needs.

  10. DEVELOPING MEANINGFUL PROGRAMMING FOR YOUR COMMUNITY (CONTINUED) • Support community residents and involve outside people in working under and through residents. • Develop programs as leadership develops. • Support the programs financially
