  1. Welcome to our special assembly We are going to talk to you about our bodies and how to stay healthy

Facts about the Human Skeleton • Our Skeleton helps us to move about and holds us up. • When you are a baby you have over 300 bones. • When you are an adult you have 206 bones because some bones fuse (join) together. • We have been learning all the names of the bones in our body. We would like to teach you some of these now and play a quick game.

  3. Joints in your skeleton • Joints help you to move your body • There are 3 different types of joints. Please could we have a few nursery boys and girls to help us demonstrate each joint. • Hinge joint – this is like the hinge on a door. It allows the bones to move back and fourth • Ball and Socket joint – this lets your bones swing in almost any direction • Gliding joint – where one part of a bone slides over another bone

All about our muscles • You have more than 600 muscles in your body, they always work in pairs. • Muscles enable us to move our bones by pulling on them, with special messages sent from our brain. • Tens of thousands of small fibres make up each muscle. • Did you know? The jaw muscle can give about 200 pounds of weight to force the back teeth together and help you break up your food. It is the strongest muscle in your body! • Does anyone know which muscle is the most important in your body? • Does anyone know which muscle is the hardest working in your body?

  5. Now we would like to sing a song all about muscles and bones, join in if you would like to! Chorus: When you nod your head Manoeuvre your cranium Or stamp your feet Twenty six bones each When you clap your hands A clash of the phalanges (clap) There’s a lot going on underneath. Oh your skin is a fabulous thing to be in But it can’t get around on it’s own Every action needs a muscle contraction And a lot of support from your bones Now the average newborn baby has over three hundred bones. And then some will fuse together on the way to being totally grown. So the average adult human has only two hundred and six, But there are still enough of them to hold you up, And do some pretty impressive tricks. The longest is the femur, in the thigh is where you'll find it; The strongest is the tibia, and the fibula is behind it. Oh it's great to know you're a vertebrate, It's divine to have a spine. So let's celebrate the fact that our backbone's stacked And give it ten out of nine for design. (backslap)

  6. Keeping healthy • We have been learning all about food groups. • You need to eat a range of foods to get all of the nutrients and fibre your body needs. • The main food groups are : • Fruit and vegetables • Meat and protein • Bread pasta and cereal • Fats and Sugary foods • Dairy

  7. What do different foods do for us? Did you know? Eating well could be good for your brain new research has found. • Vitamin A - helps you see in the dark so eat lots of orange and yellow vegetables • Vitamin C – also found in fruit and vegetables. They help your body to fight infection • Iron - found in chocolate, tomatoes and sunflower seeds. It is needed to produce the red blood cells that make up most of your blood and it moves oxygen round your body • Carbohydrates - your body uses these for energy. They are found in almost all food types but especially in bread, pasta and rice • Proteins - protein is needed for healthy growth of muscles including your heart. It is found in all red meats. • Calcium – helps to keep bones healthy and strong. It is found in dairy product such as milk, cheese and yoghurts. • Fats – a little can be good for you. It helps to cushion your internal organs and is a store of energy. Fats are found in butter, sugary cakes and peanut butter. WARNING - More than half of teachers surveyed said students behaviour got worse if they ate sugary or fatty foods.

  8. Now help us to design a healthy lunch box that will keep your brain working all day long!

  9. Kirkcowan’s Healthy Code We thought about lots of buzz words to do with being happy and healthy. Then we put them into a Healthy code. We will demonstrate the actions and then you can all join in. Kirkcowan is an active healthy school That’s what makes us happy and cool Doing lots of sport and energetic play Helping others That’s the way!

  10. Our ideas for promoting health and wellbeing in the whole school… • We are suggesting that we could do a Wake up Shake up every Friday morning for the whole school. If it is successful we could try it on a Friday afternoon too for the nursery. • Selling stars- we would like to put up a big paper Christmas tree in the corridor. We are proposing to sell stars for people to write their Christmas wishes on to each other instead of writing Christmas cards for each person. The stars would cost 20p and you would only be able to buy one star each. P3/4/5 would help nursery and P1/2 to write their Christmas messages. The stars would be on sale every afternoon from 5th December. What do you think?
