  2. Utopia • An imagined place in which everything is perfect

  3. Dystopia • An imagined place in which everything is unpleasant or bad. The opposite of Utopia

  4. Entrails • A person or animal’s intestines or internal organs.

  5. Reaping • Cut or gather • Receive (a reward or benefit) as a consequence of one’s own or other people’s actions

  6. Apothecary • A person who prepares and sells medicines and drugs.

  7. Iridescent • Showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles.

  8. Paraffin • A flammable, whitish, translucent, waxy solid used in candles, cosmetics, polishes, and sealing and waterproofing.

  9. Tesserae • A “token” from the Capitol- a year’s worth of grain and oil for one person.

  10. Meager • Lacking in quantity or quality

  11. Racketeers • A person who engages in dishonest and fraudulent business dealings

  12. Sustenance • Food and drink regarded as a source of strength; nourishment

  13. Tribute • The two teens chosen in each district to participate in the Hunger Games, as an act of repentance for rebelling to the Capitol. • HISTORICAL: payment made periodically by one state or ruler to another as a sign of dependence

  14. Repentance • Feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin • Payment for your sins or wrongdoing

  15. Treason • The crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government.

  16. Synonymous • The same or similar

  17. Tenuous • Thin and slender

  18. Plaited • Braided

  19. Insurmountable • Incapable of being overcome or passed over (you can’t get over or past it)

  27. Cornucopia • Horn containing food or drink • Symbolizes abundance

  28. Swathe • To wrap tightly with a cloth

  29. Affectations • An artificial trait, quality, action, or expression (fake- looking)

  30. Adversaries • Opponents in a contest

  31. Deluged • Flooded or overwhelmed

  32. Oblivious • Unaware

  33. Surly • Rude, unfriendly, or hostile

  34. Sic • To attack or to incite an attack (used as a command)

  35. Irredeemably • Cannot be bought back or paid off; hopeless

  36. Mediocre • Ordinary; neither good or bad

  37. Banal • Lacks freshness; unoriginal

  38. Ferocity • Savage fierceness; ferociousness

  39. Gossamer • Thin, light, delicate fabric (often used in veils)

  40. Anecdote • Retelling of an interesting or funny incident or event

  41. Urn • A large decorative vase, usually with ornamental feet or a pedestal

  42. Catacombs • An underground passageway; underground cemetery

  43. Serrated • Notched on the edge, like a saw

  44. Smoldering • To burn without a flame
