This syndrome can affect a women’s physical, metabolic and emotional health. Commonly diagnosed after women have experienced infertility, PCOS is also associated with hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenism which can cause central adiposity and increased risk of diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease. After conception, women with PCOS have increased risk of gestational diabetes. A healthy diet and lifestyle have been recognized as the core of non-pharmacological treatment of PCOS. In this course we will review current evidence supporting speci?c nutrition recommendations to improve fertility as well as overall metabolic health. Furthermore, we will discuss speci?c dietary supplements that have been found to improve metabolic and reproductive health. Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to: • Explain symptoms, diagnostic criteria and lab tests used to assess Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as well as common health complications associated with this endocrine disorder. • Discuss nutrition interventions that have been shown to decrease weight, improve insulin sensitivity, decrease markers of in?ammation and regulate menstrual cycles. • Understand current medical interventions and dietary supplements that may compliment or substitute medicine in setting of intolerance. • Identify dietary supplements which may improve insulin sensitivity, restore menstrual cycles and improve lipid pro?les.
