Your news story • Headlines ‘punchy’, direct • News up front (inverted pyramid) • You can use a quote • Write so your Dad will understand it • Save detail for the end (background facts) • Active not passive voice

What’s news? 1: Hard news: facts, strong introduction and ‘descending order’ of news values; i.e. most important information at the top, least important information at the bottom • Hard news is usually on the first five pages of a paper • Big, bold headlines • ‘Major’ stories: • wars • murders • politics
So what’s news? • 2: Soft news: often ‘human interest’ stories • Requires different writing treatment • Feature style or a ‘colour’ story • Sits beside hard news, often features photos • Stories about people, quirky events, animals
