Credits required for grade level • 0-4 Freshmen • 5+ Sophomore • 11+ Junior • 18+ Senior • **Students can’t get a college scholarship in the sophomore year but they can lose one- Stay focused! • Quick Stat: 90% of students who make it to their Junior year on track are likely to graduate on time.

Pre-College Curriculum for Qualified Admissions • 4 English (11 & 12 College Bound or Honors) • 3 Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) • 3 Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics, 1 credit science elective ) • 3 Social Studies • 1 Fine Arts • 1 Physical Education • 10 Electives - 1 Computer Technology (no longer required but Highly Recommended)

  14. Qualified Admissions Options • Above curriculum with GPA of 2.0 or 21 ACT • or Upper 1/3 of graduating class • Complete 24 credits at a community college & be at least 21 years old

Kansas Scholars CurriculumRequired for State Sponsored Scholarship Program • 4 English (11 & 12 College Bound or Above) • 4 Math ( Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry or AP Statistics) • 3 Science ( Biology, Chemistry, Physics ) • 3 Social Studies • 1 Fine Arts • 1 Physical Education • 2 Units of the SAME Foreign Language • 7 Electives - 1 Computer Technology (no longer required but Highly Recommended) Must also demonstrate financial need for State Scholarship

Why Take Honors / AP Courses ? • Honors & AP Courses provide the rigor found in the college environment. • Students are better prepared to be successful when they reach college. • Students that take AP Courses in High School are more likely to graduate from college in 4 years. • Colleges consider the experience of an Honors / AP Course favorable for scholarship consideration. • Students can earn college credit for $87

  17. Help is always available • Students can get extra help in seminar. • Teachers are available before and after school and by appointment.

  18. Campus High Tutoring Program • Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday • 3:05 to 4:00 in room C16 • Prior arrangements not required • Help available in all core subjects (Math, Science, English & Social Studies) • Generally at least 3 teachers

Credit Recovery • 2013-14 Schedule – Required classes worked back into schedule as much as possible. • Summer School 2014 – Make up core credits failed. • Juniors/Seniors Credit Recovery- At Tutoring- Make up core credits failed, $160 per ½ credit. • PASS Program – Elective credits, $70 per ½ credit.

What is Tier 2 Math/Tier 2 Reading? • Tier 2 Classes are a system wide intervention for students below grade level in reading or have deficiencies in foundational concepts in mathematics. • Students are referred to Tier 2 courses by Scantronand Formative Assessments, historical grades and teacher recommendation.

  21. ATHLETICS and Activities eligibility • Participation and grades/attendance is related • KSHSAA eligibility requirement: Student must pass 5 classes in the previous semester to participate.   23. Test Day – September 26th • 9th EXPOLRE Test • 10th PLAN Test • 11th Practice ACT Test • Please encourage your student to be in attendance and do their best. • Students will be released early.

  24. What are these Tests? • Each test is comprised of 4 subject tests-English, Math, Reading and Science. • These tests measures higher order thinking skills acquired from grades K-12. • Each test is a practice for the ACT Test. The EXPLORE & PLAN Tests includes an interest inventory.

  25. How are these Tests used? • Assess academic strengths and areas that need improvement. • Identify career interest at the time of testing. • Determine college readiness benchmarks. • Outline appropriate HS coursework especially AP classes. • Prediction of ACT success.

CHS works to develop academic strengths/interests of students: • Interest Inventories from EXPLORE & PLAN Tests • Rigorous Academics • A variety of elective offerings and career pathways • Counseling Staff and mentoring from Advisory/Seminar Teachers • Parent Input during Enrollment Conferences

What is the PSAT? • The PSAT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Competition- the top juniors in the nation. • The PSAT is available to 10th graders for practice, the test is voluntary, cost is $15. • Students in the top 20% of their class are encouraged to take the test. • Test date is October 16th. • Sign up in the CHS Counseling Office by October 10th

  29. WHAT CAN YOUR STUDENT ACCOMPLISH THIS YEAR? • Academic Success • Community Involvement • Create an activities chart • Research post high school options, decide what is best for them, make a plan and make it happen.

  33. Opportunity for SophomoresHOBY? • HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program) is a worldwide leadership program just for Sophomores. We will select 1 Campus student as a representative to attend a leadership experience (WSU) in the summer of 2014. The experience is free of charge, the student will be chosen by an essay contest. Applications are available in the counseling center. Essay deadline is September 25. • Check it out at HOBY.ORG

  34. Career Experience 2014 • March 11 and 12 • Career activity just for Sophomores • Students will have the opportunity to visit different occupations and colleges.
