Near Real-Time Monitoring of Alpine Forests with AlpMon Service

AlpMon Service offers near real-time monitoring of Alpine forests to detect forest changes, assess risks like storm and bark beetle damage, and provide valuable insights for forest management. Through advanced satellite processing, users can access forest change alerts, species mapping, and other essential data for informed decision-making.

  8. AlpMon: Sentinel-2 Processing • Fully automated Sentinel-2 (pre-)processing chain in Joanneum Impact Software • daily check for new imagery for pre-defined granules -> if YES: start pre-processing • ToA to BoA with Sen2Cor • cloud/snow masking based on enhanced Sen2Cor scene classification • topographic normalization in IMPACT (global: SRTM; Austria: LiDAR ndsm) • calculation of (vegetation) indices • time series analysis based on Least Squares estimates & Kalman Filter • can be run on various cloud environments via docker containers www.joanneum.at/digital

  9. AlpMon: NRT Forest Change Service pre-processing & time series analysis change is detected change is analysed - - email/sms alert new change layer in user-interface + download of shapefile - - - - size of affected area date of first detection change type (storm, harvest) timber volume (from CHM) www.joanneum.at/digital

  16. AlpMon: Demo Sites and Test Users • The demo sites for the AlpMon services are the Austrian Bundesland Steiermark / Styria and selected bark beetle sites in Lower and Upper Austria • The AlpMon Services can easily be expanded to full Alpine scale • Test users are from a variety of forest entities: • • • • • forest owners and forest owner representatives private forest companies private forest offices forest administration offices (Landesforstdirektion) governmental organistations www.joanneum.at/digital

  17. Frame Work Conditions • Data analyses based on time series analyses makes cloud processing absolutely necessary. EODC – Infrastructure must be available sustainably, as forest monitoring services should be offered continuously. The timely resolution of cloud-free Sentinel 2 – data is limited particularly in Alpine regions because of frequent cloud cover, 4 satellites instead of 2 satellites would be nice. Bottle neck of operational services is very often the limited information content of satellite data. Users who apply other methods of information retrieval often have detailed requirements regarding information depth and accuracy that cannot always be met by EO-based methods. • • • • www.joanneum.at/digital
