  3. VERBS • A verb usually names the action in a sentence. • We call the verb that ends in -r the INFINITIVE

  4. IN SPANISH: • There are 3 types of verbs: • Infinitives that end in -AR • Infinitives that end in -ER • Infinitives that end in -IR

  5. THESE ARE SOME INFINITIVES THAT YOU MIGHT YOU ALREADY KNOW: • Caminar • Estudiar • Mirar • Bailar • Cantar • Dibujar • Escuchar • Asistir • Vivir • Discutir • Prohibir • Unir • Aplaudir • Consistir • Correr • Leer • Vender • Deber • Creer • Ver • Temer

  6. IN SPANISH: • To change an INFINITIVE to a form that tells who is doing the action, remove the -ar, -er, -iradd the appropriate ending.

  7. STEM / ENDING • For every INFINITIVE in Spanish there is a STEM and an ENDING. • The STEM tells what action is taking place. • The ENDING tells who is doing the action.

  12. STEM / ENDING • For example, for “estudiar,”…“estudi” is the stem.

  13. STEM / ENDING • So, the endings for -ar verbs are: o, as, a, amos, áis, an

  15. STEM / ENDING • a tells us that Ud. (you) are, él (he) or ella (she) is studying.

  21. NEGATING A SENTENCE • When you want to say that you donotdo something, use nobefore the verb form

  23. ASKING A QUESTION • When we ask a question in Spanish, we usually put the subjectafter the verb or sometimes at the end of the sentence.

  25. PRESENT TENSE OF -ER VERBS

  26. The pattern for -erverbs is much like the pattern for -arverbs. The only difference is, instead of using “a” you use “e.”

  37. THE VERB VER You also know the verb VER. it is the same as the other -erverbs except in the “yo” form. It is irregular in the “yo” form. An arrow will show you the difference.
