Why Review, Assess and Give Feedback
  • First it is important to understand that instruction and assessment are connected. In other words this can be done during every lesson.
  • We assess to gage a students understanding.
  • To give feedback to enhance student learning.
  • To make sure that students’ understanding is on track and aligned with the learning and language objectives.
  • To keep the students learning experience positive.

  • It provides students information that explains misconceptions.
  • It can provide key information that helps a student develop proficiency in content and language objectives.
  • In general, feedback is an excellent way to improve academic and language performance in all content areas.

  • It can be used to scaffold student learning.
  • Feedback can help clarify meaning of vocabulary, proper use of English and enhance language and content specific objectives.
  • Provide new avenues for discussion, alternate meaning of words , improve language skills, as well as give various opportunities to learn concepts and language skills.
  • It is important for correcting misconceptions early.

How can Teachers Implement Feedback
  • Teachers can model correct English.
    • A teacher can do this when restating a students response.
  • Paraphrasing
    • Similar to modeling.
  • Specific Feedback
    • Generally given orally or in writing.
    • Use of body language; A nod, smile or encouraging look.
  • Validate a student response using complete sentences.
    • This is another form of modeling that gives less proficient EL the use of complete sentences.
