  1. Warm Ups September 3rd- 6th

  2. September 3rd • Turn in TECHNOLOGY to TECHNOLOGY box. • Write in planner • Get out My Teacher’s Secret Life assignment • YOU NEED YOUR ID NUMBER FOR THE LIBRARY!

  3. September 4th • Copy the following questions into the NOVEL section of your JOURNAL. Leave spaces for answers! • Describe Galveston, Texas in the late 1800s. • What does the narrator mean by “Galveston was the melting pot of the south”? • Galveston Island was a great location for a port, but not a city. Why? • There is a brief mention of an orphanage, what do you predict will happen to the orphanage? • Who knocked on Isaac Cline’s door in the middle of the night? Why? How does Isaac react?

  4. September 5th • Copy the following questions into the NOVEL section of your JOURNAL. Leave spaces for answers! • Where was the “safe haven” from the storm on Galveston Island? • Describe the sounds during the storm (give 3 examples). • What was the role of “death gangs” after the storm? • What tragedy happened with the orphanage? • What happened to the bodies after the storm? Use senses (see, smell, touch, hear, taste). • Describe the character of those who decided to stay rebuild their community. • In 1904, what did the island do to protect it from another hurricane?

  5. SEPTEMBER 6TH • Respond to the following in the NOVEL section of your journal: • It’s the evening of September 8, 1900, and you are trapped on Galveston Island while the hurricane powerfully ravages everything in sight. The storm is in full force, and you decide to document the events in your journal. Explain where you are and describe the weather conditions there—the wind, rainfall, water levels, temperature, etc. What amazing sights have you seen during the storm? How do you feel about what’s going on? Do you think you’ll survive? Why or why not? USE TEXT ICONS WHEN RESPONDING: TALKING, THINKING, SEEING, DOING!
