  1. Rectangles By: Jaren Tyler & Alesha IN dedication to Alex Dunckel.

  2. Definition • A rectangle is a four-sided shape where every angle is a right angle (90°), and opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.

  3. General • A Rectangles 4 angles are all equal making them 90° each. • Any rectangle is a parallelogram. Which means it follows the sufficient conditions such as opposite sides and angles are congruent. • Rectangles have two diagonals and those two diagonals are equal. • Squares are rectangles but there are also rectangles that are not squares.

  4. Height and Width • Rectangles are characterized by their height h and their width w. • If the width and the height become the same length it is no longer a rectangle it becomes a square.

  5. Equations for Rectangles • The perimeter is h+w+h+w or 2h+2w. • The area is calculated by h x w or hw • The diagonal or distance from one corner to the opposite corner is (w2+h2)1/2 or make a right triangle and use the Pythagorean theorem.

  6. Diagonals • Rectangles have two diagonals and those two diagonals are equal. • The diagonals intersect at each others midpoint but not right angles unless it is a square. However the vertical angles are congruent.

  7. Rectangles are symmetric figures • A rectangle has two lines of symmetry as seen below.
