  2. Effective assessment practices to inform planning • A wider interpretation of personal excellence alongside academic; eg. Cultural & sporting • Ongoing professional development for staff STRATEGIC GOAL 1: Our students to have excellence of teaching to help them achieve their personal best • High achievement levels in literacy and numeracy • All children’s needs met; extension of the more capable and effective programmes for those with special needs • Development of the Key Competencies to develop personal capabilities (X Goal 6) • Ongoing self-review

An understanding be developed of the importance of science for solving many environmental problems • Education Outside The Classroom to be a strong feature of the Waipahihi Curriculum Students to have a sound general knowledge about local landmarks, place-names and the geography of the area. • Students to understand the strong link between the natural environment and Taupo’s economy • STRATEGIC GOAL 2: Our school to embrace the value our community and Tuwharetoa have for our environment. • An Inquiry Approach to learning to be used with purposeful learning experiences and authentic contexts • Students to learn about the strong relationship Ngati Tuwharetoa have with the local environment eg the mountains and the lake. • A strong environmental-education emphasis throughout the school.

To foster strong relationships with the groups surrounding the school; Whanau/families PTA, BOT, Ironkidz Committee etc. • Take advantage of opportunities to form partnerships with local business and industry • Utilize community resources wherever possible • STRATEGIC GOAL 3:Our school to continue the strong partnership with our community that enhances ourstudents’ learning opportunities • To plan events that bring the community into the school on a regular basis Maintain strong communication with homes and community; newsletters, website, • To develop home-school partnerships that strengthen learning; student led conferences, Learning Portfolios, use of knowledge net OLE, open-door policy, parental involvement, parent information evenings For the school to provide opportunities for having fun together

We will “Walk the talk” ie demonstrate in action, honour and celebrate our values and social skills • The values and beliefs of other cultures will be respected • Inclusiveness will be promoted on all levels and in all contexts • STRATEGIC GOAL 4Our school to endorse strong values and social skills that will equip our students for life • Programmes to support life skills will be used eg Peer Mediation, Life Education, KOS and Kia Kaha • The school’s Virtues Programme will be highly visible and demonstrated in both word and action by staff and students. • Waipahihi School’s approach to behaviour management will be strongly linked to “managing self” in both the classroom and the playground (X Goal 6)

  6. . Our curriculum will have an E Learning Focus, where children develop the knowledge and skills to be connected to the world beyond the immediate classroom. Our curriculum to provide students with a strong sense of identity relating to this “place in the world”, Taupo. The knowledge and understandings we develop will be built upon a set of key concepts eg. “Understanding the past leads us to the future”. • STRATEGIC GOAL 5: Our learning programme to reflect our place in Taupo, in New Zealand and in the World. • Our students will develop a core “knowledge base” about Taupo and its surrounding district, New Zealand in general and the World as it relates to us. We develop 21st century learning environments as we develop the skills to teach the 21st century learner.

  7. . • Managing Self in the PlaygroundOur approach to behaviour management to be strongly based on the Key Competencies. • The Virtues Programme to link very closely to the development of the Key Competencies – they support each other Key Competencies to be planned for and taught across the curriculum and embedded in the culture of the school. • STRATEGIC GOAL 6:Our learning programmes to be built on the Five Key Competencies. Staff will require further Professional Development in the Key Competencies as they embed them into their programmes. We expect to hear the Language of the Key Competencies being used by teachers and students in their everyday interactions • Students will be given strong understanding and ownership of the Key Competencies as they are the foundation of life-long learning.
