  1. Fully Exposed Ethical DilemmasUs VS Them - September 24, 2010 Presented by: Adam Parrott & Nathan Nordstrom Websites: www.EverythingMassage.com www.EducatedTouch.com P.O. Box 3101, Gresham, Oregon 97030 (503) 706-2480 © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  2. Introduction • Welcome to “Fully exposed Ethical Dilemmas.” Our hope for you is that you will have as much fun participating as we did creating this class. This booklet is to remain as private as you feel willing to share. It will be used for our group discussion and is in no way required to be handed in. If this document is left we will collect them and anonymously add them to our statistical survey data sheet. Thank you for your participation and we hope you enjoy this class. • What are the ethical issues facing our profession today? • What issues do you currently face in your practice? © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  3. Whose ethical issue is that? (The blame game) • Jenna is giving a massage and smells a marijuana odor on her client. She is repulsed and wonders why someone would take such bad care of their own body. Don’t they know how bad “Pot” is for them? Not to mention the fact that Jenna is putting in all this time and effort to help her client become more “healthy” - it just seems like a waste of time. © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  4. Can we do that? (What is our scope of practice?) • Ryan has a client who is from a different culture. She has been a client for over two years. One day she comes in and explains that she is pregnant and would like the therapist to perform the traditional pre-natal massage care for her during her term. Ryan readily agrees, honored he can help in a cultural tradition. He then finds out that the massage is done with oil and wine, traditional draping ... which isn’t much ... and there is breast tissue massage involved. Ryan hasn’t been trained in any of these modalities, and has concerns. However, its not like its a normal type of massage and it is for a cultural tradition which is well documented and there is tons of literature for… • Local laws on scope of practice change from region to region. ALWAYS check local laws and have an understanding of your scope of practice. © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  5. Books, what books (Business responsibilities) • After a normal session, Sarah notices that her client is paying in cash. The client says she doesn’t need a receipt, pays, and leaves. Sarah takes the money, puts it in her wallet, and decides not to document the session. After all, it was just a Swedish massage and the customer wasn’t a regular. No reason to pay taxes on cash if there’s no documentation! • What forms of “books” do you need to keep for your practice? • SOAP Notes, receipts, invoice, ect. © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  6. You are not my receptionist, sister, or partner (Transference) • A client comes in for a massage a few weeks after completing a major sporting event. She’s complaining of constant pain on the bottom of her left foot. The pain is most intense in the morning. The therapist suspects that she has plantar fasciitis and decides to perform a treatment on the fascia and muscles of the lower foot. After the treatment, the client feels much better, and she asks what was wrong. The therapist, proud that she had figured out her client’s ailment, tells her client that she had plantar fasciitis. The client then asks what she should do to keep the problem from recurring and the therapist tells her to take some Advil in the morning to help relive the pain and tells the client to roll a cold golf ball under her foot to help loosen the fascia. The client thanks her therapist and leaves feeling wonderful... © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  7. leathermama@pooble.com needs a massage (judgment) • Daniel receives an email asking for a massage and if he has any openings later in the week. Everything seems completely normal in the email, except for the address of the sender ... leathermama@pooble.com ... • Daniel has had some creepy people email him off of his “Contact Me” form on his website before, and, although the email seems innocent, the little red flags in his head start going off. What if she’s a sex freak and wants to “dominate” him? What if she’s looking for more than just a massage? He decides to not respond to the email and maybe “leather mama” will just go away ... © Educated Touch (503)706-2480

  8. Do what I say, not what I do(Example) • Lynda has just finished with her client. During the post-session consultation she recommends that her client drink lots of water, keep the exercise and stretching up, and try to get in for a massage at least once a month to keep herself on a healthy schedule. The client is really trying to get herself healthy and has been working really hard and reorganizing her life in an effort to become more balanced. • After Lynda cleans up for the day she goes outside, glad work is over. She lights up a cigarette as she hops in her car and heads over to the nearest drive-thru. She’s starving! She only had a pop-tart this morning because she had overslept. Probably because she had been out until 2am drinking with her girlfriends and then had crashed on her friend’s couch. Which reminds her - she woke up with a horrible pain in her neck! Oh well - it’ll go away eventually. She’ll just pop some Ibuprofen if it’s not gone by work tomorrow... © Educated Touch (503)706-2480
