Whether an object is moving or not depends on your point of view • An object is in motion when its distance from another object is changing • Reference point: a place or an object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. • An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.
Speed • Speed: the distance an object travels per unit of time. It is a type of rate. • Rate tells you the amount of something that occurs or changes in one unit of time.
Calculating Speed • Speed = Distance/Time Ex: Horse canters 21 meters in 3 seconds. Speed= 21 m 3 sec =7m/sec
Constant Speed • If the speed of an object does not change, the object is traveling at a constant speed.
Average Speed • To find the average speed you divide the total distance by the total time.
Ave Speed Example • Ex: a cyclist travels 32 km during the first two hours and 13 km the final hour. • Distance=32km+13km=45km • Time= 2h+1h=3h • Average Speed= 45km 3h =15km/h
Velocity • Speed in a given direction • You need to know both the speed and direction of an object’s motion to find the velocity.
Acceleration • Rate at which velocity changes • Remember velocity involves 2 things: • Speed • Direction • Acceleration is increasing speed, decreasing speed, or change in direction
Acceleration-Three Types • Increasing speed=Acceleration • Examples: List two examples from p. 303 • Decreasing speed= Acceleration= Deceleration=Negative Acceleration • Examples: List two examples from p. 303 • Changing direction • Some objects change direction without changing speed-Ferris Wheels or the Moon
Calculating Acceleration • Acceleration=Final Velocity-Initial Velocity Time • Example of Units: m/s2 is meters per second per second • km/h2 is kilometers per hour per hour
Calculating Acceleration • Airplane is traveling 40 m/s after 5 seconds. • What is its final velocity? • 40 m/s • What is its initial velocity? • 0 m/s • What is its time? • 5 seconds
Calculating Acceleration • What is its Acceleration? 40 m/s – 0 m/s 5 seconds =8 m/s2 Mr. Burton is cool.
