  3. Current Research Projects • Screening for diabetes and diabetes complications • Relationship between stress and diabetes • Prevention of gestational diabetes

  4. Screening • Glucose and lipids (12-hour fast) • Retinopathy – digital retinal camera • Neuropathy – foot exam and 10-g monofilament • Nephropathy – Albumin/creatinine ratio using Bayer DCA point-of-care instrument

  5. Screening • Anthropometric Measures • Height • Weight • Waist and hip circumferences • Health History and Lifestyle Questions • 4 Manitoba First Nations Communities

  6. Screening • Capacity Building • In each community, local residents hired and trained: • Recruitment; • Obtained informed consent and administered questionnaires; and • Assisted registered nurse with physical exams

  7. Diabetes and Stress • What is the impact of chronic, multi-generational stress? • Investigate stress at individual, family and community level. • Qualitative – experience of stress; sources of stress; coping measures. • Quantitative – develop stress questionnaire that encompasses First Nation experiences • Case-control design for questionnaire. • Correlate with metabolic and anthropometric measures.

  8. Prevention of Gestational Diabetes • Dietary education and activity intervention. • Two arms: usual care and intervention activities. • Developed exercise DVD for pregnant women. • Exercises can be done at home or with group.

  9. Graduate Student Projects • Development of a diabetes foot complications prevention program. • Issues surrounding food insecurity and prevention and/or management of diabetes.
