Higher Education Academy Planning Group - Preparatory phase in 2004/5 (1) • Raise awareness and understanding across SCs • Develop a shared understanding of ESD (holistic approach) • Survey the extent and nature of current ESD • Develop/collate resources in ESD • Establish an evidence base for future work • Devise a strategic, five year plan

Higher Education Academy Planning Group • Established by the Academy; constituent membership of interested SCs; met in October 2004 • Purpose: to discuss the development of an ESD agenda for the academy • Preparatory phase in 2004/5 • Programme of activity for next 5 years • External advisers – F4F and independent consultants

Higher Education Academy Planning Group - Preparatory phase in 2004/5 (2) • SC projects - £50K allocated for funded SC activity, eg: • Surveying existing ESD practice • Collating existing resources • Developing new resources as commissioned work • Programme of Events (facilitated by F4F): • Workshop for SC staff (January) • Colloquium (Apr/May) • Workshop (June/July) draft action plan • Research Project

Higher Education Academy Research Project • Base-line research project, commissioned in January, to deliver by May 2005 (Ralf Jucker, Swansea): • Develop a shared understanding of ESD • Survey the extent and nature of current ESD • Collate current resources in ESD • Explore current models of best practice • Raise the profile of ESD • Establish an evidence base for future work; basis for pedagogic research • Project to integrate with SC-funded projects

HEFCE Consultation document(http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/hefce/2005/05_01/) • Consultation on a support strategy and action plan • Issued 5th January; responses by 11th April 2005 • Preceded by: • DfES – Sustainable Development Action Plan for Education and Skills (September 2003) • United Nations’ Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) • Strategy: vision for HE’s contribution to SD • Action Plan: series of practical actions arising from the strategy.

Future EngSC event ? • Proposal for a seminar (May/June ?) • Series of papers to cover topics within sustainability • Papers to be developed as a teaching resource, possibly a briefing paper • Purpose: to facilitate introduction of ESD into the curriculum • Development as a commissioned work - £300 per paper, typically 2-4 pages inc. bibliography
