Soleil (France): 1200 visits in 2008 (77% users from France) Elettra (Italy): 600 visits in 2008 ESRF (European): 3000 visits in 2008 There are more than 50 synchrotrons serving the world’s scientific community Number of visits per year 1 visit = 1 experiment (1 – 7 days) ≈ 1 accepted proposal

  3. Number of SA researchers per year

  4. Number of SA students per year • Some complaints about lack of funding for student travel

  5. Total number of researchers over last 5 years = 32 Total number of students over last 5 years = 19 51 South African scientists using synchrotron radiation • Note: • some students are now classified as researchers • also includes a small number of other large scale facility visits • not all scientists have replied to questionnaire

  6. Synchrotron experiments from 2004 – 2008 have produced*: • - 6 PhD degrees • - 5 MSc degrees • - 17 refereed publications • 9 conference proceedings • * a portion of 2008 data still being processed
