  1. Answer the Following Question on a Sheet of Paper: You may need to get out your notes and article to help you answer all of these! The four pigments essential to photosynthesis and leaves are listed below. Next to each pigment write what color they are responsible for producing in the fall as well as their main function in a leaf. 1. Chlorophyll 2. Carotenoids 3. Xanthophyll 4. Anthocyanin Learning Target: Describe the role of light and pigments in photosynthesis.

  2. Answer the Following Question on a Sheet of Paper: Chlorophyll Primary photosynthetic pigment Green color of leaves 2. Carotenoids Accessory pigment – absorbs energy from the wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot Yellow/orange colors 3. Xanthophyll - Accessory pigment – absorbs energy from the wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot - Yellow colors 4. Anthocyanin Act as a “sunscreen” for a plant in the fall Red colors

  3. Chromatography Chromatography is a separation technique used to separate a mixture into its individual components. A liquid moves up the paper through capillary action and carries along other substances with it. Molecules or pigments in this case will move at different speeds due to two main factors. Discuss with your partner what factors you think will affect how far the pigments in this lab will move.

  4. Chromatography Molecules or pigments in this case will move at different speeds due to two main factors. Discuss with your partner what factors you think will affect how far the pigments in this lab will move. Solubility (how well it dissolves) Molecular mass (how bit it is)

  5. Chromatography

  6. Chromatography of Photosynthetic Pigments Lab Safety: All bags need to be under the table WEAR YOUR SAFETY GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES! Solvent Solution is flammable As always – No eating or eating in lab!! ***DO NOT DISPOSE OF SOLVENT DOWN THE SINK***

  7. Clean up all supplies (remember do not dispose of solvent down the sink) • Work on the lab questions –Leave Rf calculations for tomorrow. • **you may not finish all of the questions- we will finish tomorrow • Evaluate your understanding of the learning target • Make sure the exit slip is filled out and turned in by the end of class. • Use the back if needed • 4. Grab a vocab puzzle and practice your vocabulary! What should I do if I finish?
