  7. How to Construct an I-Message I-Message Formula: • I feel (state the feeling) • when you (state the specific behavior) • because (state the effect on your life). • I want… Example: I feel frustrated when you don't listen because what I'm saying is important and I want you to hear it.

  8. Tips • How to construct an I-message will depend on the situation. • Remember that the I-message should focus on you, not on the listener. • It should state your feelings and what you want, rather than placing the blame on the listener.

  9. Practice Situations: 1. You lent a comic book to Bobbie. When he returns it, six of the pages have been ripped out. I feel upset when you return my comic book with six of the pages ripped out because I can't read that part any more. I want.... 2. Your brother leaves a mess in the kitchen. When your mother gets home from work, she gets mad at you because she thinks you did it. (To brother) I feel mad when you leave a mess in the kitchen and don't tell mom that you did it because I get blamed for it. I want.... (To mother) I feel frustrated when you blame me for leaving a mess in the kitchen because I'm getting yelled at for something I didn't do. I want....

  10. Design an I-Message for the Following Situations: 1. You lent your new bike to a friend. When she or he returns it, it has a flat tire. I feel______________________________________________ when you__________________________________________ because____________________________________________ I want ____________________________________________ 2. You're standing in the water fountain line. All of a sudden, two students push right in front of you. I feel______________________________________________ when you__________________________________________ because____________________________________________ I want ____________________________________________ 3. When you get home from school, you go to the kitchen to get a piece of pie. It turns out that your sister just ate the last two pieces. I feel______________________________________________ when you__________________________________________ because____________________________________________ I want ____________________________________________

  11. Processing Questions: • Was it difficult for you to make these I-messages? • Why was it difficult (or easy)? • If you were really in those situations, would you give an I-message? • Do you think it would work? Why/Why not?
